Metrology Engineer – Accuracy Control

LED FastStart•Franklin, LA

About The Position

Saronic is seeking a detail-oriented and experienced Metrology Engineer to support the building, integration, and testing of autonomous surface vessels. The role focuses on dimensional accuracy, alignment compliance, and precision measurement quality across shipyard operations, including hull fabrication, structural integration, outfitting, machinery alignment, and vessel assembly. The engineer works with engineering, production, and quality teams to monitor, evaluate, and improve dimensional control processes using advanced metrology equipment, ensuring vessels meet customer, naval, and industry requirements. The position involves developing and maintaining dimensional control procedures; performing inspections and alignment verification; establishing vessel coordinate systems, reference datums, and control networks; and supporting construction, integration, testing, and delivery readiness. The engineer also maintains measurement and calibration records, reports findings and nonconformances, collaborates across shipyard teams to resolve dimensional issues, and supports training on metrology equipment and accuracy-control practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Surveying, Geomatics, Quality Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 3–5 years of experience in quality engineering, dimensional control, metrology, or related roles within shipbuilding, defense, offshore fabrication, or complex manufacturing environments.
  • Strong understanding of shipyard fabrication and vessel construction processes, including hull fabrication, welding, outfitting, structural fit-up, and mechanical integration.
  • Hands-on experience with precision measurement systems, including laser trackers, total stations, digital levels, and 3D metrology software.
  • Proficiency interpreting engineering drawings, GD&T, shipbuilding tolerances, and alignment requirements.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills, including the ability to identify root causes of dimensional discrepancies, fit-up issues, distortion, and alignment problems in a fast-paced shipyard production environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to interact effectively with shipyard personnel, engineering teams, production leadership, and external regulatory representatives.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to meeting strict naval, customer, and regulatory dimensional accuracy requirements.
  • Ability to perform the stated physical demands: prolonged sitting and computer work; occasional standing, walking, reaching, bending, stooping, and lifting or carrying items up to 20 pounds; and manual dexterity and visual acuity for office and computer tasks.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced certifications in metrology, dimensional inspection, or quality systems.
  • Experience supporting vessel construction, module integration, and marine structural alignment activities.
  • Experience with laser tracker brands such as Leica, FARO, or API, or similar systems.
  • Familiarity with PolyWorks, SpatialAnalyzer, Leica Cyclone, AutoCAD, or similar metrology and reporting platforms.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and maintain dimensional control and precision measurement procedures for shipyard fabrication, assembly, integration, and testing.
  • Perform high-accuracy inspections and alignment verification against engineering drawings, GD&T requirements, regulatory and military standards, and customer specifications.
  • Use laser trackers, total stations, digital levels, and other metrology equipment to establish and maintain vessel coordinate systems, reference datums, and control networks.
  • Conduct dimensional inspections and alignment verification for hull structures, foundations, machinery, propulsion systems, piping, and integrated vessel systems.
  • Identify opportunities to improve dimensional control workflows, fabrication accuracy, and shipyard quality processes; work with engineering and production teams to reduce rework and improve fit-up efficiency.
  • Conduct dimensional inspections and oversee critical assembly and integration processes.
  • Support harbor acceptance testing and sea trials by verifying structural and system alignment, dimensional compliance, and vessel readiness before delivery.
  • Maintain inspection data, measurement reports, alignment results, and dimensional nonconformance records; prepare and present reports on quality performance, deviation analysis, corrective actions, and process improvements.
  • Ensure compliance with customer specifications, naval and maritime standards, ISO 9001 requirements, and internal quality procedures.
  • Maintain calibration records and ensure proper operation and certification of precision measurement equipment.
  • Collaborate with engineering, production, welding, outfitting, and program teams to resolve dimensional discrepancies, fit-up issues, and alignment concerns while supporting quality and schedule objectives.
  • Support training of shipyard personnel, inspectors, and technicians in dimensional control processes, metrology equipment, accuracy-control procedures, and inspection best practices.
