About The Position

The Meter Technician is responsible for connecting and disconnecting water service, performing maintenance on meter boxes and lids, and installing and repairing automatic meter reading equipment. This role ensures meters are registering properly, corrects issues with meters, and performs meter reading activities using various equipment and devices. The technician will also respond to customer inquiries and complaints, install and change water meters, and enter data into computerized systems. The position requires participation in an on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies and general supervision by the Meter Maintenance Manager.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Valid driver's license and a good driving record.
  • Good oral and written communications skills.
  • Basic computer skills including CIS Infinity.
  • Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to receive First Aid and CPR certifications within one year of employment.
  • Ability to perform regular on-call duty.
  • Ability to perform general manual labor in outdoor weather conditions.
  • Ability to navigate throughout the service area using maps, landmarks, and physical addresses.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret operating and maintenance instructions, safety procedures, standard operating procedures, schematic drawings, etc.
  • Ability to write reports, effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, customers or the general public.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Regularly required to talk or hear.
  • Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach with hands and arms, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools or equipment.
  • Required to sit, climb or balance.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Nice To Haves

  • One year of maintenance experience preferred.
  • Experience working on meters or water distribution projects preferred.
  • Good knowledge of water meter reading practices preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Connects and disconnects water service.
  • Repairs leaks and makes pressure checks.
  • Verifies meter readings on various types of meter equipment.
  • Reports violations of rules and regulations to supervisor.
  • Responds to customer inquiries and complaints.
  • Participates in on-call duty rotation.
  • Reads water consumption and records volume used by customers.
  • Takes readings of meter dials and/or automatic meter reading equipment while walking or driving routes.
  • Verifies readings to locate abnormal consumption and records reasons for fluctuations.
  • Changes out meters and repairs leaks.
  • Repairs/Replaces meter boxes, tops, and automatic reading equipment.
  • Completes related work orders.
  • Troubleshoots and maintains AMR/AMI Connectivity.
  • Downloads and deciphers information from meter usage technical reports.
  • Uses computerized meter equipment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Meter Maintenance Manager.
