About The Position

The Meter Technician II provides various field duties in support of customer services. Duties include, but are not limited to, field testing and repair of meters 3” and larger, obtaining reads from vault meters following confined space entry procedures, performing bench test of Authority meters and recording results in E-CIS.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of experience in the testing and repair of meters three inches and larger, installation and repair of Automatic Meter Reading Technology, in the operation of various valves as they pertain to large meter operations, and in testing meters in accordance with AWWA standards.
  • High School diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate
  • Skill in dismantling, testing, and diagnosing meters three inches and larger.
  • Skill in operating field tester for meters three inches and larger.
  • Skill in using Bury Splice Kits, and UR connectors.
  • Skill in data entry and in using hand held computers.
  • Ability to read meters following prescribed confined space entry procedures.
  • Ability to crawl and work in tight, unlit and unfinished spaces.
  • Ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics computations as it pertains to testing percentages of meters.
  • Ability to read maps and navigate accordingly.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Motor Vehicle Operating License and a DC Water Vehicle Endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Performs field tests of meters three inches and larger, records test data, performs repairs and retest meters and record results.
  • Obtains reads from vault meters that are non-amr following confined space entry procedure.
  • Performs Quality Assurance Inspections of meter installations and ensures that installation adheres to DC Water specifications and standards.
  • Installs all size meters and mtus and activates utilizing PSION hand held computer or any amr activation device.
  • Investigates wiring error transmissions or failure of mtu to transmit reading and takes appropriate action to correct problem.
  • Performs bench test of all size meters inputs test data to DC Water computer applications.
  • Conducts field surveys for the purpose of facilitating meter change-outs and installations.
  • Performs termination and restoration of service on accounts for non-payment with meters three inches and larger.
  • Retrofits existing amr compatible meters with mtus and activates utilizing PSION hand held computer or any amr activation device.
  • Dismantles meters to diagnose problems and to make repairs. Repairs range from simple replacement of work gear to complex situations in which many (or all) internal parts must be fabricated to regained precision as necessary.
  • Responds to radio dispatched requests for service and communicates back to dispatch final disposition of work assignment.
  • Maintains inventory of equipment on vehicle and follows appropriate reconciliation procedure.
  • Operates Authority vehicles as an essential function of the position.
  • Maintains vehicles and/or equipment in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Reports any operating deficiencies to the appropriate Authority personnel.
  • The incumbent is subject to being placed on call during hours and schedule identified by the Authority.
  • Performs other related duties and projects as assigned at the discretion of the immediate supervisor.
