About The Position

Under close supervision, reads and re-reads water meters; turns water services on/off and performs related duties as assigned. This role involves reading water meters on an assigned route using a hand-held computer device, re-reading meters to ensure accuracy, and turning water meters on/off as directed on service orders. The position also includes performing various duties to assist customer service, such as cleaning meter boxes, responding to hazards, and trimming bushes that may prevent accurate meter reading. Additionally, the Meter Reader will deliver notification of non-payment letters, pull and reinstall meters due to theft of services, replace damaged water box lids, and assist in investigating high bills or suspected leaks. In the absence of the City mail clerk, the Meter Reader will assist in afternoon mail delivery. The role requires driving a City vehicle to and from work locations, maintaining an inventory of necessary items, and ensuring the cleanliness of the truck and tools. The Meter Reader must observe standard operating procedures and safety practices and report any hazards observed in the field.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of City policies and departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Knowledge of meter and street locations.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment used to read meters.
  • Skill in using hand tools such as wrenches, screwdrivers, shovels, and meter box keys.
  • Skill in identifying hazardous situations.
  • Skill in mechanical aptitude and problem solving.
  • Skill in customer relations and handling irate citizens.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, vendors and the general public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to accurately read and record numbers.
  • Ability to walk 10-15 miles daily at a reasonable pace.
  • Ability to frequently enter and exit vehicles to accomplish meter reading.
  • Exposure to potential physical harm, infectious disease, wild and domestic animals, reptiles, spiders, and insects, including bees, insecticides and/or chemicals.
  • Works outside in extreme weather conditions such as heat, wind, and rain.
  • Performs manual tasks, including stooping, kneeling and walking for extended periods of time.
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to wear PPE required to perform the essential functions of the job.
  • Graduation from High School or equivalent preferred.
  • Six (6) months of work experience involving manual labor for extended periods in an outdoor environment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
  • Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License, Class E.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous meter reading experience preferred.
