About The Position

Under general supervision, reads water consumption meters and records volume used by residential and/or commercial consumers. Reads meters in a timely and accurate manner and at specified intervals for billing purposes. Inspects meters and connections for any defects or damages and accurately verifies readings in order to locate any abnormal or fluctuating consumption.

Requirements

  • High school diploma of GED
  • One (1) year of experience working with maintenance and plumbing tools such as pipefitting
  • Valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Collects and records meter readings using the SENSUS Auto VU meter reading system, operating drive-by technology that includes the Vehicle Gateway Base Station (VGB) and Vehicular Transceiver Unit (VXU).
  • Remains aware of the schedules for reading meters and other activities; remains aware of the reports to be generated, reviewed, and filed.
  • Engages directly with customers in a professional, one-on-one setting to review and explain usage data, address concerns, and provide guidance regarding normal and atypical consumption trends.
  • Performs work orders as required such as inspecting meters for leakage or other problems and computing rate of water loss as needed; turning water service on/off; re-reading meters; installing new meters; pulling meters; testing water flow; etc.
  • Performs a variety of maintenance activities to maintain all 3/4" and 1" meter in the City; raises and lowers meters; replaces meters; installs new meter boxes and lids.
  • Checks all meters showing zero consumption to verify proper functioning.
  • Installs radio-read meters and transmitters in accordance with the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system, ensuring reliable two-way communication through Automated Meter Reading (AMR) technology for accurate, real-time data collection.
  • Uses laptop computer and vehicle control unit to electronically read radio read meters.
  • Drafts and updates the City's hurricane maps as needed. (Used to locate meters in the consequence of a hurricane.)
  • Performs disconnect to delinquent accounts; remains “on-call” for after hour customer service on a rotating schedule performing activities such as reconnecting water and collecting charges and fees.
  • Remains 'on-call' in the event of emergencies.
  • Maintains the City vehicle; regularly checks and fills all fluids; checks tire wear and pressure; keeps the vehicle neat and clean (inside and outside), advises the City Shop of any repairs that are needed.
  • Maintains the Water Billing Office's stock and supplies.
  • Utilizes/operates a light truck, computer(s), metal detector, cash register, flow analyzer, plumbing tools, hand tools, copier, drafting tools, etc, in the performance of activities.
  • Performs various office tasks such as running the electronic cash register, answering phones, and providing customer service.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • All employees of the municipality shall learn the emergency operations procedures for their respective department and position and execute these duties fully during times of emergency. This may or may not include assignment to the Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
