About The Position

WDBJ Television, the #1 TV station in the 71st market in the country, is looking for a meteorologist for our weekend newscasts and weekday weather assignments. This role involves preparing and delivering weather forecasts across multiple platforms, including streaming channels and social media, anchoring and producing a streaming weather show, and developing all weather forecasts and accompanying computer graphics. The meteorologist will deliver on-air weathercasts, provide live weather reports from the field, and conduct live "on-the-scene" reporting, especially during breaking news and severe weather events. Responsibilities also include communicating severe weather information clearly and concisely through graphics, providing weather forecasts for partnering radio stations and/or newspapers, and communicating critical weather information to producers and staff during severe weather to ensure an accurate message to viewers. The role requires working with the News Director on station strategy, adhering to clothing and appearance guidelines, and participating in community events, school visits, and viewer meet-and-greets to represent the station positively. Additionally, the meteorologist will participate in editorial meetings, develop and field report relevant stories under tight deadlines, write and edit packages, report research-based stories, develop sources, use non-linear editing equipment, and perform various shift work, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Requirements

  • Ability to learn and operate the weather system. Initial training provided.
  • Be able to speak and write clearly and accurately
  • Must be able to work well under pressure
  • Ability to maintain professional and ethical conduct at the station and in the community
  • Willingness to be a hard-working staff member and work as part of a team is required
  • Excellent live reporting skills and strong on-camera presentation skills required
  • Strong initiative and attention to detail are required
  • Ability to work with limited supervision is a must
  • Must possess excellent interview and conversational, reading, and writing skills
  • Maintain a positive work atmosphere by behaving in a manner that will work well with co-workers, supervisors, and viewers.
  • Knowledge of social media outlets and website postings (website and digital/mobile platforms)
  • Ability to keep up with national and local news/weather is required
  • Use graphics to convey weather information to the audience
  • Analyze weather patterns into current and forecast information
  • Enterprise local hard-news stories

  • Experience in storm chasing is a plus

Responsibilities
