About The Position

Nucor Steel South Carolina (Darlington) is seeking an early to mid-career Metallurgist interested in taking on a technical role based upon the needs of the plant and the candidate’s experience. Job functions will be a direct process/product metallurgy, product/process improvements, problem-solving projects throughout the facility, and customer complaints and claims resolution. Other functions may include grade development for specialized applications, providing training to teammates, metallurgical assistance to technical service representatives and customers, and continuous improvement of the quality management system. Some travel will be required to support customer and technical requirements. This candidate will be expected to train into a rolling process engineer/metallurgical position or melt shop process/metallurgical engineering position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. (Nucor will not sponsor the need for a visa). Safety is the most important part of all jobs within Nucor; therefore, candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards at all times.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Metallurgy, Material Science, or a related engineering or scientific discipline
  • Minimum of 2 years of direct process manufacturing experience in the steel making industry with rolling, melting, or bar product exposure
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of steelmaking, refining, casting, and/or rolling processes
  • Legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Ability to initiate, lead, and uphold safety policies, practices, procedures, and housekeeping standards

Nice To Haves

  • 2 – 8 years in metallurgy, materials engineering, manufacturing, quality, or related technical disciplines
  • Wire rod product experience
  • Special bar quality exposure on automotive quality
  • Non-destructive testing (eddy or ultrasonic) of round bar
