About The Position

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Coordinator functions within the full scope of nursing practice to ultimately assist patients through the healthcare system by acting as a patient advocate and navigator. The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (MBS) Coordinator is responsible for program development, managing accreditation process and ensuring continuous compliance with Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program requirements, maintaining relevant policies and procedures, patient education, outcomes data collection, quality improvement efforts and education of staff related to patient safety. Acts as a resource for individuals and patients involved with the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Program. Provides and coordinates comprehensive, diverse services for the physicians, patients and staff involved in the Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery Program. The MBS Coordinator works closely with the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Director as well as the Registrar to ensure timely submission of outcome data.

Requirements

  • BSN or Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field and current Ohio RN License.
  • Current CPR certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment.
  • Demonstrated ability to build strong relationships with patients, providers, and interdisciplinary team members while promoting exceptional customer service and patient satisfaction.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to educate, motivate, and respond effectively to patient and stakeholder inquiries.
  • Knowledge and application of evidence-based patient education and behavior change techniques, including motivational interviewing, teach-back methodology, and self-management support.
  • Strong organizational, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proven leadership abilities and the capacity to work independently while coordinating patient care plans and meeting program objectives.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team and effectively partner with community healthcare organizations and external stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems and electronic health records to input, retrieve, and manage patient information.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality, exercise professional judgment, and demonstrate discretion in sensitive situations.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience caring for bariatric patients and/or experience in patient education preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates all care and serves as a liaison for the surgeons, consultants, patients, and staff on matters related to the Metabolic and Bariatric Program.
  • Coordinates education required for all staff caring for the bariatric patient population, including, but not limited to, Med/Surg / ICU / Emergency, Transportation, EVS, Dietary, Admitting / Registration, Surgery, and Radiology staff.
  • Develop, review, and update patient education information. Assist with seminar development, utilizing best practice guidelines and evaluating needs of the patient population.
  • Facilitate organizing all performance improvement committees, including the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Committee. THE MBS Committee will be the source for providing a setting for sharing best practices, for responding to adverse events, and for fostering a culture to improve patient care. Coordinate all aspects of monthly patient support group meetings and related activities, including agenda development and minute-taking. Arrange for guest speakers as applicable.
  • Ensure all requirements are met for submission of timely and accurate data for obtaining and maintaining accreditation.
  • Maintain local website information as applicable. Assist with Genesis HealthCare System website development as funded and supported.
  • Assist with annual budget preparation. Maintain expenses within budget.
  • Work closely with surgeons to continue program growth by ensuring coordination of care in alignment with program criteria, assuring patient care needs are met.
  • Work closely with Marketing and Public Relations, as well as the Bariatric surgeons, to continue growth of the Bariatric program by coordinating activities including but not limited to promotional materials, sponsorships, patient reunions, seminars, etc .
  • Participates in the development, coordination, and needs of monthly information seminars and support group meetings for surgeons, patients, and community, including speaker presentation materials, etc.
  • Coordinates long-term follow-up of patients, assuring the collection of specific outcome data as required. Collects data to report to our institution and required outside professional organizations.
  • Coordinates the intake screening process to identify potential patients.
  • Assists in the development and delivery of continuing education programs for staff as required and as needs arise. Participates in the hiring, orientation, and evaluation of staff.
  • Assures the departmental Policy and Procedure Manual is current and includes “best practices” for the care of the bariatric patient. Assures this manual is reviewed and revised per hospital policy and according to program criteria.
  • Maintains confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Participates in ASMBS Society as supported.
  • Performs other duties as directed.
