About The Position

The Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer (MBSCR) is responsible for the accurate, complete, and timely identification, abstraction, and submission of clinical data to the Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Accreditation and Quality Improvement Program (MBSAQIP) registry. The MBSCR supports the bariatric program’s quality, safety, and accreditation activities by maintaining high quality data, generating reports, and collaborating with the multidisciplinary team on performance improvement initiatives.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field required, along with a two (2) years of work experience in a healthcare environment involving direct patient interaction.
  • Certification as a Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Clinical Reviewer (MBSCR) is required or must be obtained within six (6) months of hire.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of medical terminology is required.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and general computer literacy required.
  • The candidate must possess excellent communication skills, strong organizational abilities, and keen attention to detail.
  • A high level of professionalism, responsibility, and performance is expected.
  • The ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team, as well as to maintain flexible work hours, is required.
  • Relevant years of experience and/or training may be substituted for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

Responsibilities

  • Identifies eligible metabolic and bariatric surgery cases performed at the institution in accordance with MBSAQIP inclusion and exclusion criteria.
  • Uses multiple sources (scheduling systems, OR logs, EHR procedure lists, billing data) to ensure complete and accurate case capture.
  • Reconciles case lists regularly to avoid missed cases, duplicates, or inappropriate inclusions.
  • Captures all eligible cases into the registry
  • Abstracts required preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative data elements for each eligible case using MBSAQIP definitions and timelines.
  • Reviews operative notes, progress notes, consultations, lab results, imaging, and discharge summaries to obtain accurate and complete information.

  • Maintains adherence to the MBSAQIP data dictionary, seeking clarification from program leadership or MBSAQIP support for ambiguous or complex cases.
  • Conducts routine self-audits and participates in internal validation efforts to maintain high data accuracy and integrity.
  • Ensures all registry activities adhere to current MBSAQIP standards, policies, and procedures, including standards related to data quality, follow up, and program governance.
  • Assists in maintaining program documentation required by MBSAQIP, such as organizational structure diagrams, committee minutes, quality plans, and evidence of ongoing quality improvement work.
  • Supports preparation for MBSAQIP verification and site visits by organizing case lists, outcomes summaries, and evidence of compliance with standards.
  • Monitors changes in MBSAQIP requirements and collaborate with program leadership to adapt local processes as needed.
  • Meets with the MBSAQIP team, MBS Director, and Program Coordinator during site visits for accreditation.
