About The Position

The (USA) Merchant is responsible for developing and executing category strategies that align with long-term business objectives. This role oversees pricing, promotion, and channel strategies while managing profit and loss for a moderately complex category. The Merchant collaborates cross-functionally to optimize supplier negotiations, assortment planning, and customer experience across channels. Leading a team, this position drives financial performance, leverages data insights, and supports operational execution to meet business goals. The role demands strong decision-making, strategic thinking, and effective team management to deliver value and enhance the customer experience. The Merchandising team in Produce plays a vital role in shaping Walmart’s fresh food strategy. Managing a broad product portfolio, the team collaborates across merchandising, supply chain, sourcing, operations, and suppliers to drive growth, enhance quality, and improve customer experience. Positioned to influence category strategy, the team identifies market trends and develops solutions impacting stores nationwide. Emphasizing collaboration and data-driven decision making, the team is committed to delivering fresh, high-quality products at everyday low prices while supporting financial management, supplier relations, and strategic initiatives to meet business objectives.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in category and channel strategy development for moderately complex categories.
  • Strong financial management skills, including profit and loss ownership and budget forecasting.
  • Ability to analyze market trends, customer behavior, and competitive landscape to inform decisions.
  • Expertise in supplier management, negotiation, and performance tracking.
  • Demonstrated team management capabilities, including coaching, mentoring, and performance evaluation.
  • Proficiency in leveraging data analytics and digital tools to drive strategic initiatives.
  • Excellent decision-making skills with a focus on customer-centric and omni-channel approaches.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business, Merchandising, or related field and 3 years’ experience in merchandising, buying, financial planning, operations, or related area OR 5 years’ experience in merchandising, buying, financial planning, operations, or related area.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and develop team members, setting performance expectations and providing coaching.
