About The Position

The Experienced Commodity Merchandiser is responsible for purchasing and selling commodities while managing customer, supplier, and freight relationships. This position requires a strong understanding of commodity markets, pricing, risk management, customer service, and FOB trucking logistics. The merchandiser will identify buying and selling opportunities, negotiate contracts, coordinate truck movement, and ensure profitable and timely execution of trades. This role is ideal for a motivated professional with established experience in commodity merchandising, transportation coordination, and relationship-based trading.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in commodity merchandising, trading, procurement, sales, logistics, or a related role preferred.
  • Experience buying and selling commodities required.
  • Experience with FOB trucking, truck freight coordination, or transportation brokerage strongly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of commodity pricing, basis, margins, freight costs, and market movement.
  • Proven ability to negotiate purchase and sales contracts.
  • Established industry relationships are a plus.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate or bachelor’s degree in agriculture, business, logistics, supply chain, economics, or related field preferred.
  • Proficiency with email, spreadsheets, order-entry systems, transportation management systems, and commodity accounting software.
  • Strong math, analytical, communication, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, market-driven environment.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with agricultural commodities, feed ingredients, grain, fertilizer, aggregates, fuel, lumber, or other bulk commodities.
  • Existing customer, vendor, carrier, or broker relationships.
  • Knowledge of DOT regulations, freight lanes, load boards, carrier rates, and trucking markets.
  • Experience managing margins, basis, freight spreads, and position exposure.

Responsibilities

  • Buy and sell commodities in accordance with company goals, market conditions, and profitability targets.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with producers, suppliers, customers, brokers, carriers, and other industry contacts.
  • Negotiate purchase and sales contracts, including price, volume, delivery terms, quality specifications, and payment terms.
  • Manage FOB truck transactions, including freight rate discovery, carrier coordination, pickup and delivery scheduling, and shipment tracking.
  • Monitor commodity markets, basis levels, freight rates, supply and demand trends, and competitor activity.
  • Identify profitable trading opportunities and execute transactions within approved risk and credit guidelines.
  • Coordinate with logistics, operations, accounting, and customer service teams to ensure accurate and timely contract execution.
  • Oversee shipment documentation, including purchase contracts, sales confirmations, bills of lading, freight invoices, and related paperwork.
  • Resolve issues related to late trucks, rejected loads, shortages, overages, quality claims, freight disputes, or contract discrepancies.
  • Maintain accurate records of trades, positions, margins, freight costs, and customer communications.
  • Manage customer accounts and provide timely communication regarding pricing, availability, shipments, and market updates.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, contract terms, credit limits, transportation regulations, and applicable industry standards.
  • Support margin improvement through effective pricing, freight negotiation, and market awareness.
  • Assist in forecasting supply needs, customer demand, and transportation requirements.
  • Represent the company professionally in all interactions with vendors, customers, drivers, brokers, and internal staff.

  • Hourly and salaried non-exempt employees will also be paid overtime pay when working qualifying overtime hours.
