The ER Mental Health Worker delivers Mental Health Services to patients in the emergency room, including the assessment, referral, and resource process to Outpatient services, CCIS, Voluntary hospitalization, or Involuntary Commitment. This role involves providing support and assistance to patients, visitors, and team members within the Emergency Department, with a focus on safely and successfully containing situations involving patients dealing with mental health. The position requires participation in interdisciplinary collaboration for planned patient care from ER admission through ER discharge, interacting with patients based on their age-appropriate needs and documenting in their records. The Mental Health Worker will assess patients for treatment needs, which may include outpatient referral and resources, a psychiatric consultation, voluntary hospitalization, or the involuntary commitment process. Clear and appropriate communication with patients, families, and medical staff is essential. The role involves developing treatment/referral plans, coordinating with providers for continued treatment or admissions, and managing the hospital's telepsychiatry equipment. Responsibilities also include maintaining a clean and safe workplace, identifying hazardous situations, providing information and direction, assisting with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, and participating in department meetings and initiatives. The Mental Health Worker may also assist in basic emergency department functions, deliver excellent patient care to ensure positive patient satisfaction, and enforce hospital policies and procedures, including safety, infection control, and HIPAA regulations. Adherence to HMH Organizational competencies and standards of behavior is expected.
