About The Position

The Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller Mental Health Center, operated by the Department of Mental Health (DMH), is seeking a compassionate and talented Mental Health Worker to join a dynamic team. This role provides direct care services to clients, assists in implementing rehabilitative behavior and recreational programs, performs client-related housekeeping duties, attends client review meetings, accompanies clients to appointments, and provides leisure activities. The incumbent will serve as a role model for Mental Health Worker I (MHW I). This position is 40 hours per week, 3rd shift (11pm-7:00am) on 5 east, with days off on Monday and Saturday in week A, and Sunday and Wednesday in week B. Employees in this position will be required to perform mandatory overtime. The facility is a 60-bed inpatient psychiatric facility providing comprehensive and timely forensic evaluations to determine pre-trial competency and/or criminal responsibility, as well as quality, integrated care to support an individual’s recovery process through ongoing psychiatric treatment and care. Requirements

  • At least one (1) year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in providing direct care services to individuals with a mental illness or physical disabilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques utilized in the care, development, and treatment of mentally ill individuals.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to gather information through observing and questioning individuals.
  • Capacity to interact with people who are under physical and/or emotional stress.
  • Ability to work in a team setting and in group situations.
  • Capacity to lift and carry heavy objects or persons.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of safety practices and procedures followed in a mental health facility, including evacuation of patients/clients.
  • Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.
  • Based on assignment: Incumbents are required upon successful completion of a training program to obtain and maintain one or more of the following certifications: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), first aid, and Medication Administration Program (MAP) certification.
  • Successful candidates will be required to acknowledge and attest to your vaccination status for both COVID-19 and Influenza.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience working with individuals with serious, persistent mental illness, substance abuse and/or who have experienced homelessness.
  • Bilingual or multilingual fluency.

Responsibilities

  • Completes MHW admission information on clients by interviewing, orienting, and documenting the information on the appropriate forms and communicating priorities to the appropriate people in order that care can be delivered.
  • Contributes to effective interpersonal and community relations to ensure the quality of client’s care and to promote the image of SCFMHC.
  • Ensures assigned coverage and other duties are completed on a daily schedule according to hospital policy confirming a safe and therapeutic environment is maintained.
  • Intervenes in managing crisis situations by utilizing hospital policies and procedures to promote the least restrictive alternative to ensure optimal client/staff safety.
  • Maintains commitment to work related growth and competency through ongoing staff development programs that promote role development.
  • Preserves a safe, clean, and comfortable environment, which complies with accrediting and licensing regulations to protect the client’s privacy and dignity.
  • Provides programmatic direct care services to clients.
  • Assists in the implementation of rehabilitative behavior and recreational programs.
  • Performs client related housekeeping duties.
  • Attends client review meetings.
  • Accompanies clients to various appointments.
  • Provides leisure activities to clients.
  • Serves as a role model for Mental Health Worker I (MHW I).
