About The Position

The Mental Health Technician (MHT) will welcome and admit consumers into the program, participate in the delivery of physical and therapeutic care, perform observation and monitoring, assist with restraint if necessary, and contribute to discharge planning. The role requires demonstrating knowledge of co-occurring disorders and appropriate interventions. MHTs work side-by-side with professional staff as valuable members of the team, maintaining therapeutic relationships and advocating for consumers.

Requirements

  • Must be a high school graduate or have HS equivalent
  • Must possess a valid Driver License and satisfactory driving record to use agency and/or personal automobile to travel to locations other than primary office.
  • Skills and competence to establish supportive trusting relationships with persons with severe and persistent mental illnesses and respect for client rights and personal preferences in treatment are essential.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of co-occurring disorders and appropriate interventions.
  • Must be able to pass Therapeutic Options training and CPR.
  • Must be able to lift and/or maneuver a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Must be able to stand and/or walk for a minimum of 8 hours at a time during each shift.
  • This position requires frequent repetitive motions to include but not limited to: bending, stooping, twisting, squatting, reaching, pulling, pushing and maintaining balance.

Responsibilities

  • Welcome and admit consumers into the program, including orienting them to the unit and completing initial admittance forms.
  • Conduct thorough searches of consumers and their belongings according to program guidelines and agency policy, and secure/catalog belongings.
  • Participate in the delivery of physical care to consumers, including assisting with personal hygiene, maintaining clean living areas, and taking/recording vital signs and other physical condition measures.
  • Accurately measure and record consumer vital signs, intake/output, and assist with care procedures as assigned and monitored by an RN.
  • Assist with maintaining a neat and clean environment, including prepping and serving meals.
  • Perform unit tasks such as answering the phone, assembling charts, and filing.
  • Ensure vital signs are completed as directed and that unit educational groups and/or activity sessions are being completed.
  • Participate in the delivery of therapeutic care by facilitating educational groups and/or activity sessions.
  • Ensure the environment promotes safety and recovery and consistently perform MHT duties related to the daily unit milieu schedule.
  • Constantly engage and interact with patients while working on the unit and promote personal growth and development by assisting consumers in adapting to and coping with stresses.
  • Observe and monitor consumers every 15 minutes to detect behavior patterns and general physical and emotional wellbeing, reporting observations in the medical chart and seeking consultation when needed.
  • Intervene to restrain violent or potentially violent or suicidal patients by verbal or physical means as required.
  • Document all services to maintain a permanent record of client activity.
  • Participate in the discharge process, working closely with the Charge RN to ensure consumers are properly prepared for discharge, including returning unit clothing, obtaining medications, and receiving stored personal property.
  • Complete all required discharge documentation before the consumer leaves the facility.
