Under the direction of the Registered Nurse, the Mental Health Specialist (MHS) provides direct patient care and participates in a therapeutic milieu on the Older Adult Unit (SB1). This unit provides care for adults aged 50 and older who are struggling with depression, anxiety, neurocognitive disorders, and related symptoms and conditions. The MHS is responsible for accurate and timely documentation, establishing therapeutic relationships with patients, participating in patient rounds, and completing patient care assignments. They are trained to identify patient behaviors that may lead to a crisis and utilize de-escalation techniques. The role involves intervening in complex patient situations, promoting least restrictive alternatives, and communicating changes in patient status to the RN. The MHS must remain awake and alert, perform Point of Care testing, and actively contribute to a safe and therapeutic environment. This includes participating in the maintenance of the unit environment, reporting maintenance and supply needs, and initiating activities that promote a clean, organized, and safe space for patients and staff. The MHS also assists patients with activities of daily living and participates in the planning and implementation of patient groups and recreational activities.
