About The Position

NaphCare is hiring Mental Health LPNs/LVNs to join their healthcare team at Kilby Correctional Facility in Mt. Meigs, Alabama. This role offers an opportunity for nurses to expand their clinical experience, build behavioral health skills, and make a meaningful impact while caring for an underserved patient population in a unique healthcare setting. As a Mental Health LPN/LVN, you will work alongside mental health professionals, medical providers, and correctional staff to provide quality care to individuals within the Alabama Department of Corrections. You will have the opportunity to strengthen your clinical skills while providing care to patients with a variety of behavioral and mental health needs. NaphCare provides training and the opportunity to gain valuable experience in both mental health and correctional healthcare.

Requirements

  • Graduate from a Licensed Practical Nursing program
  • High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
  • Actively state-certified as a Licensed Vocational Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse
  • Be able to obtain BLS CPR Certification (AHA preferred)
  • Ability to interact effectively with patients from diverse backgrounds, including those with mental health or substance abuse issues
  • Must have the ability to maintain confidentiality of all proprietary and/or confidential information and integrity, professionalism and ability to adhere to a Code of Conduct and comply with all facility(s) correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements
  • Must pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening
  • Must have the ability to stand for long periods, lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds), bend, squat, reach, push, pull, walk significant distances, and perform physically demanding tasks like CPR, all while maintaining good balance and endurance throughout a shift.

Responsibilities

  • Performing patient assessments and gathering medical and behavioral health history
  • Taking and monitoring vital signs, including blood pressure, temperature, and weight
  • Administering medications, including psychiatric medications, and monitoring patient response
  • Observing and documenting changes in patients’ physical, mental, and behavioral health status
  • Supporting mental health treatment plans and coordinating care with mental health professionals and medical providers
  • Recognizing and reporting changes in mood, behavior, mental status, or potential safety concerns
  • Providing patient education and reinforcing treatment recommendations
  • Maintaining accurate medical records in the electronic health record, TechCare
  • Responding to urgent medical and behavioral health needs
  • Providing wound care, emergency first aid, and other nursing care as needed
  • Assisting with discharge/release planning and continuity of care
