About The Position

Provide various inpatient mental health services with the goal of patient recovery. This role involves monitoring individual, group, and family therapies, assisting with the admission and discharge process, and providing mental health assessments, counseling, referrals, and intervention services. The Mental Health Counselor is responsible for completing and maintaining documentation accurately and in a timely manner according to federal, state, and AAH guidelines. Additionally, the role includes performing patient belong checks, safety checks, and providing unit tours for new patients. A key responsibility is maintaining a safe and ligature-free environment through overall milieu management. The counselor will also assist clinical staff in performing patient vital signs, blood sugar checks, and ADLs.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Psychology or Sociology or related field
Two years experience
Good communication skills
Organization planning and time management skills
Computer Literacy
Ability to recognize the needs of a variety of age groups of patients treated (i.e.) understand child growth and development, normal patterns of adolescents behavior and look for signs of normal aging
Commitment to patient focused care
Work under stressful and difficult decisions
Basic Life Support Certification (BLS)
Ability to demonstrate a commitment to patient-focused care
Ability to work under stressful and difficult situations
May be exposed to hazardous materials and life threatening diseases
Heavy lifting in accordance to DOL definition
Ability to work rotating shifts any day of the week, including holidays
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance
For patient lifts of over 35 pounds, or when patient is unable to assist with the lift, patient handling equipment is expected to be used, with at least one other associate, when available

Nice To Haves

Prior experience with various age groups is preferred
If the job involves working with adolescent patients, this position needs to recognize needs and behavior; i.e., understand patterns of adolescent behavior. Prior experience with such age groups is recommended.
If the job involves working with adult patient, this position will to recognize needs and behaviors of geriatric patient; i.e., look for signs of normal aging. Prior experience with such ages groups is recommended.
