About The Position

Administrative and professional work in planning, organization and implementation of a mental health program within a correctional setting. An employee in this class has primary responsibility for planning, organizing, and carrying out for the Bureau of Corrections Mental Health Program, a program which emphasizes preventive aspects as well as treatments. The Coordinator of Mental Health is administratively responsible to the Medical Director or head psychiatrist. Supervision is received in the form of periodic conferences and by analysis of reports submitted, to ascertain effectiveness of the program. This position includes 10% Hazardous Pay.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a recognized college or university with a Master's Degree in Guidance, Applied Psychology or Social Work and two (2) years' work experience in a related field.
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Applied Psychology, Social Science, Guidance, Social Work or and closely related field plus three (3) years' experience in areas dealing with any of the related fields.
  • Knowledge of the theory and practices of mental health, of the policies, laws, and regulations of the Bureau as they relate to mental health.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of psychology and related sciences and knowledge of statistics as applied to psychological and psycho metrical research and testing.
  • Knowledge of community facilities and the potential for utilization.
  • Knowledge of the principles of supervision and administration.
  • Knowledge of clinical and educational psychology and of the analysis and treatment of educational and behavioral problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all persons contacted during the course of the work.
  • Ability to express oneself clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Plans and develops a mental health program for the Bureau of Corrections.
  • Renders consultative and advisory services to the Director of Corrections, Medical Director and/or head psychiatrist at the Bureau of Corrections.
  • Plans and participates in programs of in-service training for staff in order to bring about development of mental health concepts and to foster the preventative approach to problems of mental health.
  • Plans and participates in studies and surveys designed to ascertain the effectiveness and adequacy of mental health services.
  • Performs other related work as required.
