About The Position

Johnson County Government is seeking qualified candidates for a new position of Co-Responder Clinician (Licensed Crisis Clinician) to work alongside the Johnson County Community College (JCCC) Police Department. This role is part of JCMHC’s Emergency Services Division but will be based out of the JCCC police department. The position offers a unique opportunity to improve the intersection between law enforcement and mental health, aiming to reduce unnecessary emergency room visits, preventable arrests, and repeat mental health calls by connecting individuals with appropriate resources. The co-responder will respond to behavioral health 911 calls with JCCC officers, provide interventions, and conduct outreach to ensure crisis resolution and identify further service needs. All in-person interventions will be accompanied by a law enforcement officer. Johnson County offers competitive benefits, retirement plans, wellness incentives, and a positive organizational culture. Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Social Work, Counseling, Psychology, or other Human Services field.
  • Kansas Behavioral Sciences licensure at the master’s level in the area of focus.
  • May require a KS/MO driver’s license, depending on department or agency.
  • Applicants who meet Kansas licensure requirements may be considered if Kansas licensure is obtained by time of an employment offer and licensure is pending confirmation at the time of employment application.
  • Must be able to meet REJIS/KCJIS requirements.
  • Must successfully complete a background investigation, including post-offer polygraph and drug screen, as a condition of employment.

Nice To Haves

  • Kansas Behavioral Sciences license at the clinical level.
  • One year of experience in the area of focus.

Responsibilities

  • Respond in person to 911 behavioral health calls alongside law enforcement to conduct an assessment, recommend appropriate level of care, assess individual risk for suicide and other safety concerns, and determine the need for resource referrals.
  • Complete in-person or phone outreach to support individuals post-crisis with connecting to necessary services, including after other 911 calls such as domestic violence, fatalities, or traumatic experiences.
  • May complete State Hospital Screenings for involuntary commitments to assist with keeping individuals safe and getting critical services.
  • Review police reports and determine appropriate next steps, including follow-up needs after the initial call to ensure crisis resolution and/or if additional resources are needed. Follow-up is conducted by phone or in-person outreach alongside a law enforcement officer.
  • Collaborate with JCMHC teams and other community agencies to advocate and partner for individuals’ needs.
  • Submit clinical documentation regarding services provided and make necessary referrals to internal and external resources.
  • Facilitate trainings for the police department regarding the co-responder role and mental health-related topics; participate in community presentations about the co-responder program.
