About The Position

The Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) for Mental Health & Addiction Services provides essential clinical and administrative support to ensure high-quality, patient-centered care. This role supports behavioral health providers by assisting with patient flow, scheduling, medication refill coordination, and ensuring patients’ needs are appropriately triaged. The CMA plays an integral part in enhancing access to care and supporting a safe, compassionate environment for patients seeking mental health and addiction services.

Requirements

  • Current Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) credential required.
  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and de-escalation skills.
  • Ability to work with sensitive patient situations with compassion, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
  • Comfort working with patients experiencing mental health or substance use concerns.
  • Ability to recognize when a patient’s symptoms warrant immediate attention.
  • Demonstrated professionalism, empathy, and teamwork.
  • Proficiency in electronic health records and clinical workflow systems.

  • Previous experience in mental health, addiction medicine, or primary care preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Room patients, obtain and document vitals, and complete intake screenings (e.g., PHQ-9, GAD-7, substance use assessments) as directed by providers.
  • Prepare exam rooms and maintain a clean, safe clinical environment.
  • Support providers with care coordination tasks as needed.
  • Schedule new and follow-up appointments for mental health and addiction services.
  • Register patients accurately, verify demographics and insurance, and ensure all required paperwork and consents are completed.
  • Communicate appointment reminders, instructions, and follow-up expectations as directed.
  • Process and manage medication refill requests following established protocols.
  • Collect necessary information for provider review (e.g., last visit date, upcoming appointment, PDMP checks when applicable).
  • Communicate with pharmacies, providers, and patients regarding refill status.
  • Complete prior authorization paperwork as needed.
  • Determine when patient concerns, messages, or symptoms need to be escalated to the Mental Health Nurse for triage.
  • Identify urgent mental health or safety concerns and follow appropriate internal escalation pathways.
  • Monitor and prioritize patient messages in the electronic health record (EHR) queue.
  • Maintain accurate documentation in the EHR in accordance with clinic and regulatory standards.
  • Support daily clinic flow and provider productivity by organizing schedules, patient lists, and care needs.
  • Assist with care coordination tasks, including referrals, release-of-information processes, and provider communication.
