MEMS Device Engineer (R&D)

Texas Instruments•Dallas, TX

About The Position

This Device Engineer role focuses on developing and optimizing MEMS sensing and actuation devices, with particular emphasis on piezoelectric and capacitive MEMS devices, including resonators. As part of Texas Instruments’ Advanced Technology Development (ATD) team, the engineer works closely with manufacturing fabs, business units, the packaging development team, and Kilby Labs. The role requires in-depth knowledge of MEMS devices and the ability to plan effectively, manage schedules and critical deadlines across multiple tasks, lead technical discussions in areas of expertise, and work across organizational boundaries. The engineer communicates project status and actions clearly and collaborates with diverse teams and multiple organizations to accomplish goals. Regular project updates are reported to management, stakeholders, and business partners.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Physics, or a related engineering field.
  • At least 5 years of experience with MEMS devices for actuation and/or sensing, including design, layout, finite-element simulation, process-flow development and fabrication, and characterization or analysis.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD focused on MEMS devices for actuation and sensing and/or resonator devices.
  • Strong background in MEMS-related device physics and technology development.
  • Strong background in analog circuits, particularly in conjunction with MEMS devices.
  • Proven track record of qualifying MEMS devices for marketable products.
  • Understanding of equivalent device circuit models for MEMS devices.
  • Understanding of MEMS packaging flows and interactions with MEMS devices.
  • Strong project management, organization, and communication skills.
  • Knowledge or experience with materials and process interactions.
  • Strong interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in teams and collaborate effectively with people in different functions.
  • Ability to take initiative and drive results.
  • Strong time-management skills that enable on-time project delivery.

Responsibilities

  • Design, lay out, simulate using finite-element methods, and optimize MEMS devices and components.
  • Integrate MEMS processes and evaluate fabrication, devices, and characterization results.
  • Collaborate with fab and manufacturing engineers to ensure device manufacturability.
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers to enable device reliability.
  • Work with modeling and PDK engineers on modeling and technology enablement.
  • Collaborate with packaging and product teams to ensure device product capability.
  • Investigate failure root causes to improve devices, processes, reliability, yield, and products.
  • Work with product groups and other partners to enable new business opportunities using MEMS technologies and establish roadmap direction.
  • Report project updates regularly to management, stakeholders, and business partners.
  • Plan work, drive schedules, meet deadlines across parallel tasks, lead technical discussions, communicate project status and actions, and collaborate across organizational boundaries.
