About The Position

Edison Scientific is seeking an Applied AI Engineer to join the team building its AI scientist agent, Kosmos. The role focuses on developing and maintaining production AI agents, prototyping new capabilities with internal science and engineering teams, and helping shape the platform’s evolution. The engineer will primarily improve the agents’ capabilities, reliability, and usefulness across the life sciences, while also spending time with customers to understand real workflows and validate solutions. The position involves architecting agents from prototype through production, developing reusable infrastructure such as agent skills, tool-use pipelines, and benchmarks, and translating field insights and internal research into product direction. Approximately 30% of the role involves working with R&D partners in real environments.

Requirements

  • Typically, 4 or more years of professional software engineering experience, including production experience shipping systems that real users depend on.
  • Experience building LLM-powered tools or applications, including prompting, context engineering, agent architectures, and evaluation frameworks.
  • Strong engineering foundation in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Mathematics, Physics, Data Science, or a related technical field.
  • Proficiency in Python and/or TypeScript, with the ability to pick up new tools and frameworks quickly.
  • Ability to work across engineering, science, and product teams.
  • Comfort building from scratch, driving clarity in ambiguous situations, and wearing multiple hats.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in life sciences, biomedical research, scientific computing, or technical R&D workflows.
  • Experience building agent systems, tool-use pipelines, or evaluation and benchmarking frameworks for AI applications.
  • Contributions to open-source scientific or AI tooling.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, implement, and maintain the AI agents powering Edison’s platform, from prototype through production.
  • Work with internal science and engineering teams to explore agent architectures, prompting strategies, tool integrations, and evaluation frameworks.
  • Develop reusable infrastructure, including agent skills, tool-use pipelines, and benchmarks, to improve agents across the platform.
  • Spend approximately 30% of the time with R&D partners understanding their workflows, testing solutions in real environments, and bringing insights back to the team.
  • Translate field insights and internal research into product direction and help prioritize what to build next.
