About The Position

Respond to and investigate death scenes to determine if the death falls within the medicolegal jurisdiction of Brazos County for the Forensic Services Department; provide on scene and telephonic death investigation for the Forensic Services Department.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D
  • 1 – 3 years’ experience in death investigations required
  • Requires certification through the American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators required withing 2 years of hire

Responsibilities

  • Respond to scenes physically and/or telephonically to investigate reports of death, talk to and interview pertinent individuals, photograph and record postmortem findings on or around the body at the scene.
  • Conduct extensive follow-up investigate activities about the death.
  • Respond to Department phone line 24 hours a day while on-call.
  • Communicate with families, funeral homes and law enforcement as needed for cases; may include notifying families of death.
  • Prepares reports for all death scene investigations prior to examination of the body and documents and records property and evidentiary items at the scene.
  • Obtain hospital, police, and Justice of the Peace records and other documents and specimens from hospitals pertaining to the death investigations such as subpoenas and writs of attachments.
  • Testify in court regarding investigate report from the death scenes.
