About The Position

The South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and community inclusion for people with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities through person-centered services. Medication Technicians carry out individual training, behavior management, and therapy programs from a variety of therapeutic disciplines to ensure that each person served at the South Dakota Developmental Center (SDDC) will develop to their fullest potential. Medication Technicians maintain a structured and healthy environment designed to enhance the well-being of persons served while providing continual guidance regarding life skills, academic skills, and work skills to ensure appropriate social interaction. This position would be responsible for administering medications and treatments to clients and maintains medication records to ensure accurate dispensing of medications. Will handle hazardous medications. Will need to be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This is an as needed (PRN) position and could work varied hours and shifts.

Requirements

Must complete the South Dakota Medication Certification course.
A licensed nurse may delegate the administration of medications authorized only to unlicensed assistive personnel who have a minimum of high school education or the equivalent and who are registered with the Board of Nursing.
Current Medication Certification or past experience passing medications.
Knowledge of techniques used in conducting teaching plans for people with developmental disabilities.
Knowledge of facility routine.
Knowledge of basic social skills.
Knowledge of principles of basic human behavior.
Knowledge of safety procedures and practices.
Knowledge of basic health care.
Knowledge of protective health measures.
Knowledge of physical and emotional needs of people served.
Skill to prepare routine reports.
Skill to follow established policies and procedures.
Skill to carry out procedures of teaching or treatment plans with people served.
Skill to understand and apply instructions.
Skill to communicate information clearly and concisely.
Skill to compare information and recognize discrepancies.
Skill to use a computer and applicable data entry software.
Skill to quickly analyze and react to emergency and stressful situations while remaining calm.
Skill to exercise tact and discretion in dealing with others.

Responsibilities

Carry out individual training, behavior management, and therapy programs from a variety of therapeutic disciplines.
Maintain a structured and healthy environment designed to enhance the well-being of persons served.
Provide continual guidance regarding life skills, academic skills, and work skills to ensure appropriate social interaction.
Implement approved behavioral intervention techniques.
Accompany individuals to appointments as necessary.
Provide support and motivation through interactions with clients.
Participate in close observation of clients at SDDC.
Redirect unacceptable behavior if possible and apply physical restraint if necessary, utilizing non-violent crisis intervention techniques to defuse potentially violent situations.
Administer medications and treatments to clients.
Maintain medication records to ensure accurate dispensing of medications.
Handle hazardous medications.
