About The Position

The Medication Technician is responsible for the accurate and timely distribution and documentation of medication for residents in accordance with physician's orders and applicable regulations. This role also involves assisting residents with their overall well-being, including activities of daily living, social activities, and dietary needs, all while adhering to Viva Senior Living's philosophies and standards. The position requires compassion, dignity, and adherence to the Resident Bill of Rights. In exigent circumstances, the employee may be subject to call back during emergency conditions. The employee must also adhere to Viva Senior Living's attendance policies and the terms and conditions of employment outlined in the Employee Handbook. A strong command of the English language is necessary for effective communication.

Requirements

  • Must possess, at a minimum, a high school diploma or a GED.
  • Must be a Registered Medication Aide with the State of Virginia.
  • Must be able to work well with peers in a congenial work environment.
  • Must maintain the utmost compassion and dignity to the residents and adhere to the Resident Bill of Rights.
  • Must be able to read, write, speak and understand English.
  • Must maintain the highest standards in caring and servicing the needs of the residents and residents' family members and loved ones.
  • Must adhere to all facility policies and procedures.
  • Must provide annual verification of a negative TB skin test.
  • Proof of full COVID-19 vaccination required with exceptions for medical and religious accommodations.
  • Must be able to move intermittently throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to cope with the mental and emotional stress of the position.
  • Must be able to see and hear or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately.
  • Must meet the general health requirements set forth by the policies of this facility, which include a medical and physical examination.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with the ill, disabled, elderly, emotionally upset, and, at times, agitated residents.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of 25 pounds to a minimum height of 5 feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of 50 feet.
  • May be necessary to assist in the evacuation of residents during emergency situations.

Responsibilities

  • Accurate and timely distribution and documentation of medication for residents.
  • Assist residents in maintaining their total wellbeing by following the established Plan of Care.
  • Provide assistance with activities of daily living, social activities, and dietary assistance.
  • Supervise and care for residents on a daily basis according to their needs.
  • Aid with activities of daily living, including bathing, showering, shampooing, dressing, oral hygiene, shaving, hair, and fingernail care.
  • Observe, supervise, and record resident self-administration of prescribed medications.
  • Report medication refusals and/or reactions to the supervisor on duty.
  • Direct residents and family members to appropriate staff for other needs or information.
  • Order meal trays for residents when needed.
  • Report and record observations of changes in residents’ condition to the director or supervisor in the daily logbook.
  • Transfer relevant information to the next shift through the shift-to-shift verbal report.
  • Implement personal care plans for each resident.
  • Communicate patiently and understandingly with staff, residents, and visitors, speaking slowly and clearly.
  • Refer families to the director or supervisor regarding the status of residents when unsure of status.
  • Provide assistance in the dining room as needed.
  • Administer medication as directed by the supervisor.
  • Answer emergency calls promptly and courteously, completing required paperwork afterward.
  • Retrieve soiled linen and personal clothing from resident living areas, and sort and pre-soak linens as required.
  • Responsible for general upkeep and cleanliness of a resident’s room, including emptying waste baskets, wiping spills, washing dishes, putting away clothes, checking refrigerators for spoiled food, and making beds/changing linens.
  • Check for unsecured throw rugs and extension cords.
  • Observe the condition of the room/apartment and report anything in need of repair to maintenance.
  • Document clearly and objectively on residents in the logbook and on other documents.
  • Participate in in-service educational programs as required.
  • Perform other duties as required.
