The Medication Technician provides medication services and direct resident care, assisting in maintaining a positive physical and psychosocial environment for residents. The Medication Technician assists residents with activities of daily living, housekeeping, laundry, and other daily chores. This role is responsible for the daily operation of the medication room and medication services as directed by the Health Services Director (HSD) and in accordance with physician orders, state regulations and the nurse practice act. The technician processes physician medication and treatment orders, administers and assists with the self-administration of routine and non-routine medications, and completes simple treatments and monitors residents as directed by the HSD. Accurate record-keeping of medication and treatment services, including controlled substances, is essential. The role also involves coordination with pharmacies for medication orders and refills, reporting all medication errors per policy, and reporting/recording changes in resident condition, incidents, and accidents to the HSD, physician, and family members as indicated. Communication with physicians, pharmacies, outside services, residents, and families regarding medication and care services is routine. The Medication Technician provides direct resident care while promoting dignity, independence, and choice, regularly observes residents’ physical and mental conditions and reports changes. They assist with or provide care services as directed by the resident’s cooperative service plan, greet residents, visitors, and staff courteously, and follow and support community fire safety and infection control practices. Additional duties include serving meals, assisting residents at mealtime, providing tray delivery, assisting with dining room and kitchen clean-up, and assisting in lifting, moving, and transporting residents using proper body mechanics or assistive devices. The technician also assists with tours, move-ins, move-outs, and transfers, coordinates personal care services with coworkers, and responds to assistance pages promptly. They perform First Aid, initiate emergency response procedures, properly store medications and equipment, and keep the medication room clean and orderly. Removing outdated or discontinued medications and attending/participating in training, in-services, and staff meetings are also part of the role.
