About The Position

Medication Aides assist residents who are functionally, physically, and or unable to safely receive their medications as directed by the prescribing physician and in compliance with Nebraska state law. Furthermore, the Medication Aide's role is to assist those individuals with activities of daily living that they are unable to perform without help, fostering at all times resident's independence and freedom of choice. All responsibilities will be conducted in a manner that is consistent with the philosophy of the facility.

Requirements

  • Evidence of current registration and Continuing Education Units (CEU) as required by Nebraska State Law.
  • Must be able to lift/push up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be able to walk 4 miles daily.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, stand, bend, squat, crawl, reach and kneel using good body mechanics for sustained periods of time.
  • Must possess sight/hearing senses, or use prosthetics that will enable these senses to function adequately so that the requirements of this position can be fully met.
  • Must be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability in order to cope with the physical, mental and emotional stress of the position.

  • Assistance with dressing and undressing (clothing should be neat, clean, and appropriate for the season).
  • Bathing, personal hygiene (shaving, dental hygiene, nail care, hair care, foot care).
  • Mobility devices (cane, walker, wheelchair, crutches) including monitoring of safe transfer and ambulation techniques, care of ADL devices such as eyeglasses, contact lenses, hearing aids, and dentures.
  • Instrumental Activities of Daily Living: Provide assistance with telephone (assist with calls, hearing and vision adaptive devices).
  • Housekeeping tasks such as vacuuming, emptying trash, cleaning bathroom, bed making, and bed changes, and laundry.
  • Escorts residents and coordinates internal transportation needs, assist with residents' personal correspondence when requested.
  • Health Maintenance and Monitoring Tasks: Observes and reports/documents changes in resident's physical condition and cognitive/emotional status to Facility Nurse.
  • Monitors for environmental safety hazards and reporting.
  • Dining: Assists in a variety of tasks related to dining. Escort residents to dining room. Set up and clean tables, serve meals, preparation of light meals and or snacks. Document resident nutritional intakes as directed.
  • Activity Program: Responsible for participating in and supporting the resident-centered activity program Assist activity program in helping residents to remember and participate in activities, facilitates and coordinate activities as scheduled by the Activities Department.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Responds to and acts appropriately in emergency or disaster situations. Responsible knowledge of facility disaster policy location and contents, reports emergency situations to administrator or designee immediately.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure facility Medication Administration and Self-Administration Medication Policies and Procedures are adhered to.
  • Follow written direction as to when the specific medication may be provided and understanding of medication records.
  • Provide medication administration in adherence to the Five Rights and Medication Aide Act, basic medication standards, hand washing, and glove technique.
  • Documentation of medications including initials, PRN charting and protocol along with other additional activity protocol and follow through.
  • Observations to be made including time, specific signs and symptoms, and directions for reporting and recording.
  • Obtaining and transcribing physician orders, and system for acquiring medications.
  • Proper storage and handling of medication, controlled substances, drug disposal, and medication error procedure.

  • Respond to and act appropriately in emergency or disaster situations. Responsible knowledge of facility disaster policy location and contents, report emergency situations to administrator or designee immediately.
  • Plan and complete duties with minimal direction from supervisor.
  • Work collaboratively with peers and other team members.
  • Use tactful, diplomatic communication techniques in potentially sensitive or emotionally charged situations.
  • Follow up with appropriate staff, residents, or other individuals regarding reported complaints, problems, and concerns.
  • Act as ambassador and public relations representative to guests and other offcampus visitors.
  • Maintain all certifications required for employment under Nebraska Assisted Living Regulations & Licensure and Medication Aide Act.
  • Display courteous, tactful, helpful manner with residents, families, visitors and fellow employees.
  • Adhere to safety and infection control policies and procedures according to universal precautions.
  • Maintain confidentiality in the workplace.
  • Demonstrate an appreciation of the heritage, values, and wisdom of the residents and an understanding of the aging process.
  • Attend and participate in staff meetings, participate in in-services, projects or committees.
  • Adhere to dress code and maintain good personal hygiene practices.
  • Assist in training of new staff.
  • Other duties as assigned.
