About The Position

Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices. Medical Techs should only perform those tests that are authorized by the Laboratory Director and that are within the individual's skill level as determined by education, training or experience, and technical abilities. The staffing of the Summit Medical Center is based on a teamwork concept. Employees may be cross-trained in other clinical areas and may be expected to perform duties other than their normal ones as staffing and patient needs change.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent & education or experience equivalent to an Associate's degree.
  • Graduate of accredited program in Medical Technology or related science.
  • Current license/certification as a medical technologist or equivalent.
  • Documentation of training for high complexity testing is considered equivalent for those training prior to 4/24/1995.
  • Minimum 1 year experience.
  • Proven phlebotomy experience.
  • Blood bank processes, chemistry, hematology and coagulation testing, and others as required.
  • Principles of Standard Precautions.
  • Ability to function as a member of the hospital team.
  • Ability to perform tasks of a medical technician efficiently.
  • Compliance with the attendance policy.
  • Compliance with continuing and mandatory education programs.
  • Ability to respond quickly, physically and mentally when priorities and /or the patient's condition changes.
  • Ability to read and write (legibly).
  • Ability to communicate appropriately and effectively.
  • Ability to understand and resolve simple to complex problems.
  • Ability to understand simple to complex instructions.
  • Ability to constantly walk, stand, and/or lift.
  • Ability to frequently utilize full range of motion, including crouching, stooping, reaching, bending and twisting.

  • Ability to function independently without constant supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
  • Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting, and maintaining records of patient results.
  • Maintains records which demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens.
  • Follows the laboratory's policies, including taking and documenting corrective actions, whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Identifies problems that may adversely affect test performance or test results reporting and correcting the problem or notifying the appropriate supervisor.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications.
  • If required by route of qualification, performing high complexity testing only under the on-site direct supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services.
  • Maintains required records, reports, and statistics as directed.
  • Requests and orders supplies as necessary to keep materials on hand at all times.
  • Participates in educational programs and in-service meetings.
  • Attends meetings as required.
  • Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with patients, families, visitors and other center employees.
  • Participates in Quality Assessment activities as directed for the continuous improvement of patient care and Center business.
  • Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument and-procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
