About The Position

Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. This role involves performing high-complexity testing, including all blood bank, microbiology, manual differentials, and manual cell counts. The Medical Technologist must be able to alter or adjust methods and procedures for different patient age groups and notify patient care units or physicians of critical lab values. Accurate record-keeping for statistics and billing is essential, along with maintaining current knowledge of hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and new testing methods. The position requires proficiency in billing and coding and the ability to manage and operate laboratory equipment safely and correctly.

  • Attends annual review and departmental inservices, as scheduled.
  • Attends 12 staff meetings annually; or reads and returns all staff meeting minutes.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Actively participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the hospital, as well as the focus statement of the department.
  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.
  • Or Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technician and 2 years of experience in the Clinical Laboratory.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Operates the following equipment correctly and safely: photometer, spectrograph, colorimeter, microscope.

Responsibilities

  • Processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory.
  • Maintaining laboratory records.
  • Following laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Maintaining quality control practices in the Laboratory.
  • Functioning in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, coagulation, urinalysis, venipuncture, reference and point-of-care testing.
  • Inventorying and ordering supplies for all laboratory areas.
  • Performing testing, inventory, quality improvement, and quality assurance under the supervision of the Laboratory Manager.
  • Performing high-complexity testing, including all blood bank testing, all microbiology testing, manual differentials, and manual cell counts.
  • Altering or adjusting methods and procedures for neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
  • Performing quality control procedures and instrument checks.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of expected lab values for all patient age groups.
  • Notifying patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
  • Meeting current documentation standards and policies.
  • Interacting professionally with the Laboratory Manager, Pathologist, and clinical laboratory staff.
  • Consulting with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Performing all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Supporting and maintaining a culture of safety and quality.
  • Following standard precautions at all times.
  • Managing and operating laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
  • Demonstrating knowledge of new testing methods, products, and instrumentation; remaining informed on all current technologies.
  • Maintaining current knowledge of hospital policy, accrediting organization, state, and other regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrating the ability to be flexible, organized, and function under stressful situations.
  • Demonstrating the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in billing and coding.
