The Medical Technologist (MLS) is responsible for accurately performing routine and special laboratory tests according to procedure manuals and recording their results. This role involves evaluating test results, including normal and abnormal findings that require notification, documentation, and/or verification. The MLS will also evaluate results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness, following prescribed policies for reporting and notification. Additionally, the position includes performing and documenting calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment, recognizing indicators of test and/or instrument malfunction, and implementing appropriate corrections. Quality control and assurance for improvement are key aspects, involving performance, documentation, and review according to established protocols, with corrective action taken when indicated. The role also encompasses performing internal and external proficiency testing, specialty testing in areas such as chemistry, hematology, and coagulation, and supporting disease-specific accreditations by meeting turn-around time goals.
