Medical Technologists (MT) are responsible for receiving and obtaining specimens from patients for laboratory analysis, setting up laboratory equipment, and performing procedures. They must maintain quality control, properly label specimens, and adhere to safety and infection control protocols. This role involves recognizing and reporting panic values immediately to physicians or charge nurses, and efficiently handling stat orders. Additionally, the Medical Technologist performs blood typing and cross-matching for transfusions, manages blood unit requests, and maintains accurate records. They are expected to correct out-of-control procedures, follow recording and reporting policies, and maintain laboratory equipment according to preventative maintenance schedules. Inventory management and temperature recording for lab equipment are also key responsibilities. The position requires a rotating schedule including day/night shifts, weekends, holidays, and on-call duties.
