Under general supervision, performs and reports routine and special laboratory tests on clinical specimens to aid in the diagnosis and monitoring of patients. Performs analyses in hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, blood bank and microbiology according to expected performance standards. Performs venipuncture, finger stick, or heel stick on identified patients by physician's request in a timely, accurate and caring manner. Keeps documented records current regarding maintenance and quality control. Follows the laboratory's procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results. Maintains records that demonstrate that proficiency testing samples are tested in the same manner as patient specimens. Adheres to the laboratory's quality control policies, documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed. Is capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either must correct the problems or immediately notify the general supervisor, technical supervisor, clinical consultant, or director. Follows the laboratory's established corrective action policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory's established acceptable levels of performance. Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the laboratory's established performance specifications.
