This position is responsible for the analysis of biological specimens in the laboratory, including comprehensive knowledge of collecting specimens (such as venipuncture or collecting hazardous or infectious materials for culture). The Medical Technologist prepares reagents, organizes daily workload, and performs quality control. They appraise results to distinguish normal and abnormal values, perform calculations, and prepare and distribute written, LIS, and verbal reports. This role also involves performing preventative maintenance of instruments, troubleshooting methodologies, and teaching new technologists. The Medical Technologist maintains daily and monthly workload and inventory of reagents and materials, and enters data into the LIS as required. They must follow all safety policies and procedures. For high complexity tests, this position may serve as a General Supervisor (CLIA definition) and for moderately complex testing, may serve as a Technical Consultant (TC) defined in laboratory policy, to ensure remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications, patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system functions properly, orientation is provided to all testing personnel, and annual personnel performance evaluations and documentation of testing personnel performance competency are completed.
