About The Position

This is a part-time weekend position for a Medical Technologist. The role involves performing various laboratory tests, maintaining equipment, ensuring quality control, and adhering to departmental policies and procedures. Key responsibilities include specimen handling, result verification, communication of critical values, and maintaining accurate documentation. The technologist will also be responsible for equipment calibration, maintenance, and troubleshooting, as well as staying updated on relevant policies and procedures, including those related to coding, billing, and patient education.

Requirements

  • Current knowledge and training on equipment and procedures.
  • Competence in computer skills pertaining to order entry, and laboratory computer system orders, collections, result entry, patient report retrieval, and report printing tasks.
  • Knowledge of coding and billing policies as they pertain to determination of medical necessity and federally mandated reimbursement.
  • Ability to assess educational needs of patients and provide education.
  • Ability to adapt performance of procedures to accommodate unique needs of patients.
  • Ability to maintain required records, reports, and statistics.
  • Ability to document accurate and ongoing assessments of patient status.
  • Ability to complete shift end check prior to leaving duty.

Responsibilities

  • Follow established departmental and SMC policies and procedures, objectives, quality control and performance improvement programs, safety, environmental, and infection control standards.
  • Consistently perform test procedures following written procedures conforming to current standards and manufacturers recommendations.
  • Review and verify patient results prior to reporting and communicate critical values and other grossly abnormal results to the appropriate healthcare personnel in a timely manner, following established policies.
  • Receive and/or collect specimens and label them appropriately, maintaining specimen integrity until specimens are discarded following established policies and procedures for specimen retention.
  • Perform supply inventory as assigned to prevent shortages in assigned work areas.
  • Implement infectious disease controls as appropriate including isolation procedures, proper use of hand washing and gloves.
  • Follow proper procedures for disposal of sharps and hazardous materials.
  • Clean and maintain laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Perform required calibration, maintenance, and quality control of instruments and procedures.
  • Notify supervisor promptly of customer concerns, unsafe conditions, and malfunctioning instruments/test procedures.
  • Maintain competence in computer skills pertaining to order entry, and laboratory computer system orders, collections, result entry, patient report retrieval, and report printing tasks.
  • Attend required SMC and departmental safety, compliance, and infection control in-services.
  • Maintain knowledge of coding and billing policies as they pertain to determination of medical necessity and federally mandated reimbursement.
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, current literature, and in-service meetings.
  • Assess educational needs of patients and provide patients with education of procedures, obtaining patient feedback to ensure their understanding.
  • Adapt performance of procedures to accommodate unique needs of patients.
  • Maintain required records, reports, and statistics, as directed.
  • Document accurate and ongoing assessments of patient status that reflect nursing interventions, patient responses, patient teaching and status of outcomes at discharge.
  • Complete shift end check prior to leaving duty.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
