About The Position

Medical Technologists (MT) are responsible for receiving and obtaining specimens from patients for laboratory analysis, setting up laboratory equipment, and performing procedures. They maintain quality control, ensure proper labeling of specimens, and adhere to safety and infection control protocols. This role involves recognizing and repeating panic values, notifying physicians or charge nurses of critical results, and promptly handling stat orders. Additionally, the Medical Technologist performs blood typing and cross-matching for transfusions, manages blood unit requests from LifeServe, and maintains associated records. They are expected to correct out-of-control procedures, accurately follow policies for recording and reporting results, and maintain laboratory equipment, including preventative maintenance and temperature logging. Inventory management and timely notification of supervisor for reordering are also key responsibilities. The position requires working a rotating schedule that includes day/night shifts, weekends, and holidays, as well as taking call as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Medical Technology, Medical Laboratory Science, or a closely related field.
  • ASCP, IMLS(ASCP), MLS(ASCPi), NCA, AMT, MT (AMT) or MT (HEW) certification required.
  • Willingness and ability to work a rotating work schedule including am/pm/weekends/holidays plus on-call schedule when working weekend and occasional on-call during the week required.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and obtains specimens from patients for laboratory analysis.
  • Sets up the laboratory equipment and material for the procedures required.
  • Uses the reagents, solutions, and stains in the appropriate and necessary manner.
  • Maintains good quality control on all procedures.
  • Labels tubes and specimens properly with all required information each time.
  • Uses good safety and infection control procedures when obtaining specimens.
  • Recognizes and repeats all panic values.
  • Notifies physician or charge nurse immediately when results are in panic levels.
  • Stat orders are always acknowledged immediately and obtained as quickly as possible.
  • Types and cross matches patients requiring transfusions, requests and receives units of blood from LifeServe, and maintains the necessary records.
  • Demonstrates ability to correct out-of-control procedures by taking all required steps.
  • Follows policy and procedures accurately for recording and reporting results.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment in proper condition and follows preventative maintenance schedules as required, logging date and time.
  • Keeps inventory updated and notifies supervisor of orders ahead of time.
  • Records temperature of refrigerators, and heating blocks at time of use.
  • Works rotating schedule including day/night/weekends/holidays and takes call as needed.
