About The Position

The Medical Technologist will perform complex laboratory procedures utilized for the diagnosis and treatment of disease as appropriate for patient age to include neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric adults. This role involves recognizing deviation from expected results, analyzing and correcting problems using scientific principles to provide reliable test results that aid physicians in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment. The technologist will perform a variety of laboratory tests, operate laboratory information systems and related software, analyze quality control data, and perform preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation. They will also be involved in new instrument or procedure implementation and training, investigate complaints, and demonstrate independent, competent, and professional judgment. Specific duties include analyzing blood samples for blood group, type, and compatibility, entering data into computer systems, reviewing laboratory findings for accuracy, ensuring complete documentation, instructing staff on policies and procedures, and participating in the training and orientation of new staff and students. The role also involves maintaining supply inventories and recommending changes to improve service and efficiency, coordinating activities with other departments, and performing departmental operational duties as necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, chemical, physical or biological sciences, or related field, or foreign equivalent.
  • Passage of the Board of Registry examination (ASCP, AMT or NCA).

Responsibilities

  • Perform complex laboratory procedures for diagnosis and treatment of disease across all age groups.
  • Recognize deviation from expected results and analyze/correct problems using scientific principles.
  • Provide reliable test results to aid physicians in diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.
  • Perform a variety of laboratory tests, many of which are complex.
  • Operate laboratory information systems, PCs, and instrument-related computer software.
  • Analyze quality control data and take appropriate action to maintain test accuracy and precision.
  • Work independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines and records.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and basic troubleshooting of instrumentation and equipment.
  • Perform new instrument or procedure implementation and training.
  • Investigate complaints about service and equipment and take corrective action.
  • Demonstrate the capability to employ independent, competent and professional judgment.
  • Conduct analysis of blood samples to determine blood group, blood type, and compatibility for transfusion purposes.
  • Enter data from analysis of medical tests and clinical results into the computer.
  • Review laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.
  • Ensure documentation is complete according to department policies and procedures.
  • Instruct staff in work policies and procedures, and the use and maintenance of equipment.
  • Participate in training and orientation of new staff and students, to provide ongoing education.
  • Maintain supply inventories.
  • Recommend changes that could improve service and increase operational efficiency.
  • Coordinate activities with other departments to ensure services are provided efficiently and timely.
  • Perform or assist with departmental operational duties as necessary.
