About The Position

Responsible for the processing of laboratory specimens and reporting of results in all areas of the clinical laboratory. Maintains laboratory records. Follows laboratory policies and procedures; maintains quality control practices in the Laboratory. This role involves performing high-complexity testing and adapting methods for different patient age groups. The Medical Technologist will also perform quality control procedures, notify relevant personnel of critical lab values, and maintain accurate laboratory records. Collaboration with other departments and ensuring patient safety are key aspects of this position. The role requires managing and operating laboratory equipment safely, staying informed about new testing methods and technologies, and maintaining knowledge of current hospital and regulatory requirements. Flexibility, organization, and teamwork are essential.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology.
  • Certification as a Medical Technologist in the following specialties: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
  • Significant manual skills/motor coordination & finger dexterity.
  • Medium to Heavy effort. May exert up to 35 lbs. force.

Responsibilities

  • Function in all areas of the clinical laboratory: blood bank, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, serology/immunology, urinalysis.
  • Perform high-complexity testing.
  • Alter or adjust methods and procedures for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
  • Perform quality control procedures and instrument checks.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of expected lab values for the neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patient.
  • Notify patient care unit and/or physician of critical lab values.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records on procedures performed for statistics and billing.
  • Maintain appropriate quality control (QC) requirements.
  • Meet current documentation standards and policies.
  • Interact professionally with the Director of Clinical Laboratory, Pathologist and clinical laboratory personnel.
  • Consult with other departments, as appropriate, to collaborate in patient care and performance improvement activities.
  • Perform all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Follow standard precautions at all times.
  • Manage and operate laboratory equipment safely and correctly.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of new testing methods, products, instrumentation; remain informed on all current technologies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of hospital policy, JCAHO, state and other regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrate the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Demonstrate the value of team concept on a consistent basis.
  • Wear appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) at all times.
  • Use the principles of AIDET in every customer encounter.
  • Complete other duties as assigned and required.
