This part-time position involves performing, evaluating, and monitoring laboratory tests as authorized within established protocols. The role includes selecting and performing additional procedures when indicated, monitoring workflow, and making necessary adjustments to ensure timely completion of work. The Medical Technologist/Technician will evaluate results for clinical significance, validity, and appropriateness, and follow established protocols for reporting and notification of test results. Responsibilities also include performing and documenting calibration, maintenance, and repair of instruments and equipment, recognizing and correcting test and/or instrument malfunctions, and performing, documenting, and reviewing quality control and quality assurance procedures. The role involves ensuring specimen suitability and proper labeling, collecting specimens from patients of all age groups, and providing general direction, training, and technical assistance to medical laboratory technicians, phlebotomists, and support staff. Additionally, the position assists in developing education and training protocols, instructing students and new team members, and improving the quality and efficiency of laboratory procedures. Ensuring compliance with accrediting agency standards, supporting CAP Regulatory requirements in an acute setting, and performing internal and external proficiency testing are also key duties. The role includes performing specialty testing in areas such as transfusion services, microbiology, chemistry, hematology, histology, coagulation, and flow cytometry. A critical aspect of this role is providing direct support and timely, accurate laboratory results for critical care departments like the ED, ICU, and OR during high acuity patient events, which may involve transfusion services, attending codes, performing testing on irretrievable samples, tissue grinding, gram stains, mass casualty procedures, and mass transfusion procedures. The incumbent must demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
