Requirements

  • Appropriate Bachelor’s degree to meet CLIA certification standards for medical laboratory technician (required)
  • Two (2) years of hospital laboratory experience in section leading (required)
  • Medical Technologist certification (required)
  • MT(ASCP)
  • MT(AMT)
  • MT(HEW/HHS)
  • Beginning in January 2004, newly certified individuals must participate in The AAB Board of Registry (BOR) Certification Maintenance Program (required)

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience with automated equipment in department supervising (preferred)
  • Specialty certification from American Society of Clinical Pathology (SBB,SC,SH,SM, SCYM, SMB) (preferred)

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Laboratory Supervisor in maintaining laboratory standards in accordance with accrediting bodies.
  • Perform technical review of standard operating procedures.
  • Validate new procedures.
  • Review and coordinate quality control.
  • Submit feedback to the Laboratory Supervisor for technical evaluation of section employees.
  • Perform direct observation and ensure competency for all department staff.
  • Recommend and implement improvements necessary to achieve operational goals and to improve patient outcomes.
  • Monitor quality control and proficiency testing for the department.
  • Ensure that accreditation standards are met for the department.
  • Demonstrate comprehension of all procedures within the department as defined in the Procedure Manuals.
  • Review Procedure Manuals biannually and revise procedures as necessary.
  • Evaluate new technologies for the section in conjunction with the Medical Director of the department.
  • Serve in a problem-solving role for the department.
  • Assist in the orientation of new department employees.
  • Meet regularly with Laboratory Supervisor and section Medical Director and seek involvement regarding capital purchases, operational, and technical issues.
  • Identify and report any safety hazards or concerns.
  • Monitor staffing needs.
  • Attend required department or hospital meetings.
  • Maintain staffing for call-ins or other unusual circumstances.
  • Maintain an adequate reagent and supply inventory in the department.
  • Make suggestions for improvements of procedures and workflow.
  • Communicate to staff consistently.
  • Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct.
  • Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
