Performs diagnostic testing on patient samples to aid physicians in the diagnosis and/or monitoring of various disease states. Follows standardized procedures and helps prepare samples for testing. Analyzes test results for accuracy, acceptability, and critical limits. The Medical Technologist (MT) performs a wide variety of duties in the laboratory. The MT is responsible for performing Moderate and High Complexity Testing on blood and all types of body fluid specimens, working in various areas of the Laboratory (i.e. Chemistry, Hematology, Blood Bank, Microbiology, etc.), and ensuring accurate and reliable test results by adhering to instrument maintenance, calibration and quality control procedures. The role also involves the ability to properly use the Laboratory Information System (LIS), maintaining records and statistical data according to regulatory requirements, coordinating with phlebotomy and other hospital staff to ensure proper collection of patient samples, and troubleshooting problems with laboratory equipment, test methods, and sample collection. Additionally, the MT will train new employees and students on laboratory methods, instruments, and policies, communicate patient results and/or problems to Medical or Nursing Staff, and possess good customer service and communication skills, with the ability to work under pressure of emergency situations. Other duties may be assigned by the Supervisor or Laboratory Director.
