Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performance and appropriate interpretation of moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA ‘88. This role involves performing and interpreting tests, acting as a resource for laboratory users, reviewing testing performed by others for compliance, prioritizing samples, ensuring accurate specimen identification and labeling, and verifying sample appropriateness for requested testing. The position also requires ensuring testing is performed within defined time periods, resolving specimen issues, maintaining sample storage, accessioning tests, performing instrument maintenance, recognizing and reporting instrument or methodology problems, performing and assessing Quality Control data, and recognizing and reporting technical and non-technical problems in laboratory operations. Additionally, the role involves performing analytic testing, assessing result validity, maintaining clear and accurate records, reviewing patient results, investigating and performing additional testing to resolve problematic results, transcribing results accurately into the LIS, appending appropriate coded comments, reviewing entered LIS codes for accuracy, notifying appropriate personnel of Critical Alert Values, documenting Critical Alert Values in LIS, and maintaining proficiency in LIS functions. The position also requires proper documentation of reagents, maintaining blood inventories (Blood Bank only), ensuring work completion by end of shift, assisting other laboratory sections, participating in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities, maintaining competency documentation, and self-documentation for continuing education. The Medical Technologist I also attends staff meetings, supports the education of students and staff, participates in committees or task forces, communicates professionally, works cooperatively with colleagues, reports incidents and safety hazards, completes mandatory safety education, abides by HIPAA policies, keeps work area neat and stocked, performs assignments with minimal direction upon completion of training, plans and prioritizes tasks, adjusts to variable workloads, maintains open communication with leadership, restocks workstations, assesses inventory, notifies management of supply needs, adheres to Boston Medical Center’s values, follows Hospital and Laboratory Infection Control and Safety procedures, and performs other duties as assigned.
