About The Position

Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, this position provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performing and appropriately interpreting moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA '88. The Medical Technologist I is responsible for accurate specimen identification, processing, and testing, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and departmental procedures. This role also involves instrument maintenance, quality control assessment, problem resolution, and contributing to the education and training of other staff and students.

Requirements

Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited university or college in applied science, Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science, which includes successful completion of a supervised course of clinical internship in an approved hospital laboratory.
OR Bachelor's degree in applied science, or other discipline with an Associate’s Degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technician with combined coursework sufficient to meet scientific requirement for employment in CAP accredited laboratory.
Entry level position.
Knowledge of clinical tests and standards necessary to perform highly complex tests as defined by CLIA and accurately report results.
Analytic abilities to perform highly complex testing as defined under CLIA 88, interpret findings, perform calculations, calibrate instruments, and review highly complex testing performed by other employees.
Ability to maintain compliance with all regulatory agency (e.g. JC, CAP, FDA, AABB) requirements.
Manual/visual dexterity necessary to prepare specimens, prepare solutions, screen specimens and operate a computer software system.
Interpersonal and English verbal and written language skills sufficient to exchange information with physicians and interact with other technologists.
Ability to perform venipuncture techniques.

Nice To Haves

Certification by American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or National Credentialing Agency (NCA) or equivalent agency as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Technician, or specialty certification.
Equivalent agency is defined as an agency that requires a degree in science from an accredited college or university with successful completion of an examination for certification. Such agencies include but are not limited to ASCP, NCA, American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB), Health Education and Welfare (HEW), and American Society of Microbiologists (AMT).

Responsibilities

Perform and interpret moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests.
Prioritize STAT and routine samples.
Ensure accurate specimen identification and labeling.
Verify appropriateness of samples for requested testing and obtain approval for deviations.
Ensure sample testing is performed within defined time periods.
Resolve mislabeled/unlabeled or inappropriate specimens and document actions taken.
Identify and report patient identification or medical record number problems.
Ensure prepared samples are stored according to standard operating procedure.
Perform aliquotting and processing of specimens within established time limits.
Accession specimens according to standard operating procedure.
Perform instrument and equipment maintenance.
Recognize and report instrument, equipment, or methodology problems.
Perform QC procedures and assess Quality Control data.
Recognize and report technical and non-technical problems/discrepancies in laboratory operations.
Perform analytic testing and assess the validity of results.
Maintain clear, concise, accurate, and legible records of test performance.
Provide proper documentation and records of all test procedures performed.
Review patient results, recognize problems/discrepancies, and investigate further testing.
Transcribe results/information accurately into the LIS system and append appropriate coded comments.
Use LIS to promote clarity and correct interpretation of laboratory results.
Review entered LIS codes for transcription accuracy.
Notify appropriate person of all Critical Alert Values and provide documentation.
Notify appropriate person of all required call backs of results and provide documentation.
Maintain proficiency for all designated LIS functions.
Provide proper documentation of receipt and implementation of reagents/lots/materials.
Ensure adequate Blood inventories are maintained (Blood Bank only).
Ensure all work is completed and/or accounted for.
Assist other laboratory sections as needed.
Participate in Quality Advancement/Quality Improvement activities.
Maintain initial and annual competency documentation.
Maintain age-specific competency for all tests/procedures performed.
Attend departmental continuing education classes.
Participate in scientific or service-related continuing education classes.
Attend all scheduled staff meetings or read minutes.
Support education of Medical Technology students, Pathology residents, new staff, and others.
Support technical training of departmental staff members.
Participate on Sectional, Departmental, or Hospital committees or task forces.
Communicate important information regarding the laboratory to fellow staff members.
Answer the telephone according to departmental policy and respond to inquiries/requests.
Work cooperatively with other laboratory staff members and assist where needed.
Report all incidents, safety hazards, or accidents to appropriate personnel.
Attend mandatory safety education sessions.
Respect patient and employee confidentiality.
Keep equipment and work area neat, orderly, and well-stocked.
Perform assignments with a minimum of direction and assist others.
Maintain open communication with Supervisors and Medical Directors.
Plan and prioritize tasks and adjust to variable workloads.
Assess inventory on a weekly basis and notify Supervisor of supply needs.
Utilize Medical Center’s values as the basis for decision making.
Follow established Hospital Infection Control and Safety procedures.
Perform other duties as assigned or as needed.
