Under the general direction of the Technical Supervisor, provides ancillary support for clinical activities by performance and appropriate interpretation of moderate and high complexity clinical laboratory tests as defined under CLIA ‘88. This role performs moderate and high complexity tests after specialized training and required experience, and acts as a resource for laboratory users. The position also involves reviewing testing and/or procedures performed by other staff to maintain compliance with regulatory agencies, prioritizing STAT and routine samples, and ensuring accurate specimen identification and labeling. The Medical Technologist I is responsible for ensuring the appropriateness of samples for requested testing, obtaining approval for deviations from standard operating procedure, and following up with notification and documentation. They ensure sample testing is performed within defined time periods, initiates appropriate action for specimen issues, and informs other sections about patient identification or special specimen requirements. The role also includes ensuring proper sample storage, aliquotting, processing, and accessioning. Instrument and equipment maintenance, recognition of problems, and QC procedures are also key responsibilities. The Medical Technologist I assesses the validity of results, maintains accurate records, investigates and resolves problematic patient test results, and transcribes results into the LIS system. They are responsible for notifying appropriate personnel of Critical Alert Values and maintaining proficiency in LIS functions. Documentation of reagent receipt, quality control, and inventory management are also part of the role. In the Blood Bank section, ensuring adequate blood inventories is required. The role ensures all work is completed by the end of the shift and accounted for at shift change. Assisting other laboratory sections, participating in Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement activities, and maintaining competency documentation are expected. The Medical Technologist I also participates in continuing education, staff meetings, and supports the education of students and new staff. They may participate in committees and task forces, communicate professionally, and work cooperatively with colleagues. Reporting incidents, safety hazards, and accidents, completing mandatory safety education, and adhering to HIPAA policies are also required. Maintaining a neat work area, performing assignments with minimal direction, planning and prioritizing tasks, and maintaining open communication with leadership are essential. Restocking workstations, assessing inventory, and notifying management of supply needs are also part of the role. Adherence to Boston Medical Center’s values and mission, and following established Infection Control and Safety procedures, including dress code and PPE, are mandatory. Other duties as assigned are also part of the role.
