About The Position

Performs medical laboratory testing and supervisory duties designated by the supervisor. This role involves receiving and processing specimens, performing testing according to established procedures, reporting accurate test results, performing quality control, equipment maintenance, and instrument calibration. The Medical Technologist will also assume responsibility for the management of the section in the absence of the supervisor, coordinating activities of others, and working with various hospital staff and healthcare professionals. This position is identified as a safety-sensitive position under the Oklahoma Medical Marijuana Use and Patient Protection Act.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Medical Technology or in a related Biological/Chemical Science from an accredited college or university.
  • Must have passed national certification exam as a laboratory scientist that is accredited by an approved agency.
  • 1 year related experience with high complexity testing.
  • PC Basic skills as needed to enter data and utilize computer efficiently.
  • Demonstrated skills in interpersonal relations, leadership, and communication.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.

Responsibilities

  • Receives and processes specimens, components and/or requisitions in a timely manner to meet or exceed turnaround time standards.
  • Verifies specimen identification and labeling, and determines if specimen is acceptable for analysis.
  • Identifies discrepancies, resolves, and documents for quality assurance.
  • Assists other employees in the department during times of high volume testing.
  • Performs and documents blood component processing according to established procedures (BB Only).
  • Provides appropriate platelet and plasma components as requested (BB Only).
  • Documents special component needs in transfusion service information systems (TSIS) (BB Only).
  • Reviews and confirms recipient and donor information at the time of blood component issue (BB Only).
  • Maintains adequate blood component inventory and uses the inventory effectively (BB Only).
  • Performs testing according to established procedures, organizing work for maximum efficiency and maintaining efficiency during stressful situations.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of technical and instrumental procedures.
  • Identifies absurd results and repeats tests as needed.
  • Maintains a clean, uncluttered work area and uses required personal protective equipment and physical barriers.
  • Works independently with minimal supervision and uses time efficiently when work is completed.
  • Reviews specimen logs for unreceived specimens.
  • Performs patient and component testing according to established procedures (BB Only).
  • Uses TSIS efficiently to record testing results and comments (BB Only).
  • Records testing information accurately on logs or in the computer.
  • Recognizes reportable limits, critical values and instrument flags when reporting results.
  • Checks prior results, if available, when deciding acceptability of results.
  • Calls critical values to defined person immediately and documents call in the computer.
  • Uses LIS efficiently to order tests, enter results and obtain information.
  • Follows laboratory procedure when correcting results.
  • Accurately reports ABO and Rh types (BB Only).
  • Accurately reports indirect and direct antiglobulin test interpretations (BB Only).
  • Accurately reports cross match interpretations (BB Only).
  • Performs routine instrument maintenance and quality control daily without supervision.
  • Recognizes problems, implements and documents corrective actions, and informs supervisor when appropriate.
  • Performs calibration on most instruments.
  • Assists in managing the daily operation of the department as assigned.
  • Communicates necessary work related information to section personnel, other laboratory sections and laboratory management.
  • Works and communicates with other hospital staff to resolve problems.
  • Communicates necessary information to the supervisor.
  • Reviews testing results, quality control and equipment maintenance.
  • Manages the department, or section in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Offers assistance and training to bench technologists as needed.
  • Assists supervisor in major decision making process.
  • Supports and assists in implementation of changes in the department.
  • Writes technical procedure as needed.
  • Works with medical laboratory science students during educational laboratory activities.
  • Coordinates activities of others (does not supervise).
  • Leads others in same work performed (does not supervise).
  • Has input on performance evaluations but does not prepare or give.
  • Works directly with patients and/or customers.
  • Works with internal customers via telephone or face to face interaction.
  • Works with external customers via telephone or face to face interaction.
  • Works with other healthcare professionals and staff.
  • Works frequently with individuals at Director level or above.
