About The Position

Loretto Hospital is seeking a dedicated Medical Technologist to join their Lab. Reporting to the Administrative Director of Laboratory, the Medical Technologist is responsible for performing clinical testing on patient specimens originating from all age specific groups of in-patients, out-patients and employees of the hospital. The Medical Technologist is responsible for demonstrating and utilizing technical and analytical skills to provide physicians with necessary diagnostic information for the initiation of proper medical care and treatment of patients. Services are provided with optimum concern for the quality of medical treatment and care rendered to the patient. The duties performed by hospital staff in this position will demonstrate what is best for the patient as well as promote development of an awareness and cooperation reflecting the interrelationship of departments in caring, comforting and healing the sick and injured.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a chemical, physical, or biological science or medical technology from an accredited institution OR Associate degree in laboratory science (chemical or biological science) or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution with at least six (6) years of clinical laboratory experience in high complexity testing.
  • Accurately identifies patient specimen before processing testing.
  • Process and reports testing as per order.
  • Follows department’s patient results “Read Back” policy when notifying results.
  • Follows all infection control policies including hand washing.
  • Completes testing accurately and within established time limits.
  • Involves in initiating troubleshooting instrument problem.
  • Routine Test Performance: Direct observations of routine test performance including patient preparation, specimen handling, processing and testing.
  • Result Reporting: Monitoring the recording and reporting of results.
  • Intermediate Test Results: Review of intermediate test results or worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results and preventive maintenance records.
  • Instrument Maintenance: Direct observation of performance of instrument maintenance and function checks.
  • Assessment: Assessment of test performance through testing previously analyzed specimen, internal blind samples or external proficiency samples.
  • Problem Solving: Assessment of problem solving skills.
  • Time Management: Efficient use of work time to complete assignments within expected time frames; ability to accept or respond to change in a manner that promotes and supports departmental/hospital goals and objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Performs all duties of a Medical Technologist, including performing clinical testing on patient specimen and demonstrating technical and analytical skills to provide physicians with necessary diagnostic information.
  • Assesses test results and equipment for accuracy and validity (Age Specific), including evaluating, reviewing and approving all finalized patient test results, reporting proper reference ranges, recognizing and reporting critical or panic values, verifying critical or abnormal findings, and establishing contact with the physician when necessary.
  • Performs Quality Control associated with patient testing and result accuracy, including performing QC testing daily, evaluating and comparing QC results, documenting QC and responding to unacceptable results, identifying and resolving QC problems, notifying supervisors of QC problems, and demonstrating knowledge of troubleshooting techniques for instruments/equipment.
  • Performs Preventive Maintenance on all instruments and equipment within an assigned Work center, including functioning independently in performing PM procedures, documenting PM steps, notifying supervisors of equipment problems, and documenting the need to order supply parts.
  • Participates actively in Continuous Quality Improvement Monitoring and Quality Assurance activities within the department/hospital, including demonstrating knowledge of CQI plans, recognizing and reporting situations requiring monitoring, documenting error corrections and quality issues, and participating in Quality Assurance by gathering data and completing assignments.
  • Participates in efforts to improve the performance of the Organization/department, including participating in General Staff meetings, continuing education programs, utilizing hospital/department policies/procedures, and demonstrating knowledge of departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Participates in Continuing Education for personal and professional growth, including attending mandatory and voluntary education programs, sharing information from education programs, demonstrating knowledge and willingness to learn the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and maintaining LIS security and patient record confidentiality.
  • Implements guest relations in all interactions with patients, the general public, and employees, including maintaining professional appearance, interacting with courtesy and respect, writing correspondence with a positive tone, and using proper telephone etiquette.
  • Participates in annual safety, disaster, fire and infection Control programs, including attending mandatory programs, identifying hazards and reporting them, participating in safety reviews and inspections, and using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) according to protocol.
  • Complies with and implements hospital and departmental mission, including utilizing value statements, promoting a caring and compassionate health care environment, and assisting patients and families in understanding and following medical recommendations.
