About The Position

The Uhealth Laboratories Department at the University of Miami has an exciting opportunity for a Medical Technician. The Medical Technician performs a variety of routine medical technician duties, such as preparing blood, urine, and tissue specimens for analysis. The incumbent also administers prescribed medications to patients and maintains related medical records. Additionally, the Medical Technician verifies identity of patients receiving medication and records name of drug, dosage, and time of administration on specified forms or records. The Medical Technician also takes vital signs and observes patients to detect response to medication. An employee in this position also performs tests on tissue, blood, and body fluids to help physicians diagnose and treat diseases.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent/relevant experience, certification or license
  • Minimum 1 year of relevant experience required
  • Current Florida Medical Technician License
  • Learning Agility: Ability to learn new procedures, technologies, and protocols, and adapt to changing priorities and work demands.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work collaboratively with others and contribute to a team environment.
  • Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using office software, technology, and relevant computer applications.
  • Communication: Strong and clear written and verbal communication skills for interacting with colleagues and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with the chemical analyses of body fluids, such as blood and urine, using a microscope or automatic analyzer to detect abnormalities and diseases.
  • Enters findings into the appropriate database.
  • Sets up, adjusts, maintains, and cleans medical laboratory equipment.
  • Observes principles of asepsis when obtaining blood and tissue samples from patients.
  • Analyzes the results of tests and experiments to ensure conformity to specifications using special mechanical and electrical devices.
  • Conducts blood tests for transfusion purposes and performs blood counts.
  • Obtains specimens, and cultivates, isolates, and identifies microorganisms for analysis.
  • Consults with a pathologist to determine a final diagnosis when abnormal cells are found.
  • Adheres to University and unit-level policies and procedures and safeguards University assets.
