About The Position

The Medical Scribes will perform clerical and information technology functions for the unit/department. This includes primary responsibility of the operation of the electronic health records and electronic dictation system. The Medical Scribe is responsible for documenting accurate and detailed information of patient visits. This position will provide the highest quality customer service to patients, adhere to practice protocols and processes, and effectively manage the volume of work without allowing quality to be compromised. This position may need to travel to various treatment centers for coverage and volume needs.

Requirements

  • High School or equivalent
  • Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments to the extent required to understand and accurately transcribe dictated reports.
  • Translate medical abbreviations into their expanded forms.
  • Excellent customer service skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to details.
  • Proficient in Microsoft office and excellent computer skills.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association
  • Fire Life Safety Training (LA City) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire and maintained by renewal before expiration date. (Required within LA City only)
  • AB508 (Management of Assaultive Behavior) If no card upon hire, one must be obtained within 30 days of hire or transfer into the department and maintained by renewal before expiration date.

Nice To Haves

  • Specialized/technical training
  • Successful completion of Medical Assistant certification program preferred
  • At least 1-year experience as a medical scribe in a healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow MD for all patient visits and transcribes the conversation.
  • Decides which information should be included or excluded in reports.
  • Distinguishes between homonyms, and recognize inconsistencies and mistakes in medical terms, referring to dictionaries, drug references, and other sources of anatomy, physiology, and medicine.
  • Identifies mistakes in reports and check with doctors to obtain the correct information.
  • Performs data entry and data retrieval services, providing data for inclusion in medical records and for transmission to physicians.
  • Reviews transcription for accuracy.
  • Returns dictated reports in printed or electronic form for physician’s review, signature, and corrections for inclusion in patient’s medical records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Informs the Charge nurse of any matters that should be brought to his/her attentions, including complaints, medical concerns, and or safety issues.
  • Is cross trained to do customer service rounds in the Critical Care Department and follow the chain of command for conflict resolution with the charge nurse first, then clinical coordinator, then director as necessary and nursing supervisor after hours.
