About The Position

The Medical Scribe serves as an integral member of the patient care team by assisting optometrists with accurate and timely documentation of patient encounters. Working side-by-side with providers, the scribe records medical histories, examination findings, diagnoses, treatment plans, procedures, and patient instructions within the electronic medical record (EMR). The Medical Scribe helps improve provider efficiency, supports quality patient care, and ensures accurate clinical documentation.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Strong computer and typing skills.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy while working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience as a medical scribe, ophthalmic technician, medical assistant, or healthcare professional.
  • Experience working with electronic medical records (EMR/EHR).
  • Knowledge of ophthalmology and optometry terminology.
  • Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) or willingness to pursue certification (if applicable).
  • Associate's degree or coursework in healthcare-related fields.

Responsibilities

  • Accompany providers during patient examinations and accurately document encounters in real time.
  • Record patient histories, chief complaints, review of systems, examination findings, diagnoses, and treatment plans.
  • Document ophthalmic and optometric testing results, including but not limited to: Visual acuity, Refraction finding, Tonometry, OCT, Visual fields, Fundus photography, Corneal topography, Other diagnostic testing as directed.
  • Enter orders, referrals, prescriptions, and follow-up instructions as directed by the provider.
  • Assist with chart preparation and review prior to patient appointments.
  • Ensure all documentation is complete, accurate, and compliant with regulatory standards and practice policies.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.
  • Assist clinical staff with workflow coordination and communication between providers and patients.
  • Review charts for completeness and ensure documentation is finalized in a timely manner.
  • Support additional administrative or clinical duties as assigned.
