About The Position

The Medical Records Technician, under the direction and control of the HIM Supervisor, is responsible for organizing and managing patients' health information data for inpatients, emergency room, and/or outpatient records. This role involves utilizing the electronic health record system for inquiry, data entry, report generation, and releasing medical information as appropriate. The technician will also collect, monitor, and process department-related data, communicate with healthcare professionals, ensure accurate and timely dissemination of transcribed documents, and maintain the security and accuracy of electronic health records (EHR) databases. The position may require working evenings, nights, and/or weekends.

Requirements

  • 2 Year degree preferred with coding knowledge.
  • Certified Professional Coder preferred.
  • Healthcare experience a plus.
  • Reaching and grasping with arms and hands.
  • Proofreading and checking documents for accuracy.
  • Using a keyboard to enter or transform words or data.
  • Hearing in normal and soft tones.
  • Ability to read and understand written English words and sentences.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing in English words and sentences.
  • Ability to understand spoken English words and sentences.
  • Ability to communicate with others by telephone and e-mail.
  • Ability to perform duties and responsibilities promptly and with little direct supervision in planning and organizing workload.
  • Ability to judge the appropriate action in response to changes, circumstances or problems.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and manage patients’ health information data consistent with medical, administrative, ethical, legal, and regulatory requirements.
  • Utilize electronic health record system for inquiry purposes.
  • Enter and send data, and generate required reports.
  • Release medical information, as appropriate.
  • Collect, monitor, and process department related data and information.
  • Communicate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to clarify diagnoses or to obtain additional information.
  • Ensure accurate and timely dissemination of transcribed documents to departments.
  • Maintain electronic health records (EHR) databases.
  • Verify accuracy and accessibility of files.
  • Ensure all files are secure.
  • May contact patient/customer in regard to patient records.
  • Actively participate in all special events.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • May be required to work evenings, nights, and/or weekends on a regular or as needed basis.
