About The Position

Under the direction of the Health Center Manager, the Medical Receptionist Interpreter Float performs a variety of tasks related to patient registration, scheduling, medical records, and front office operations. The Medical Receptionist Interpreter Float provides Spanish interpretation services to patients, families, and staff as needed, both in person and over the telephone. The position may be required to float to other clinic locations to provide interpretation and front office support based on operational needs. As a team member, the Medical Receptionist Interpreter Float will demonstrate knowledge and skills to appropriately communicate and interact with staff, patients, families, and visitors of all age groups while being sensitive to their cultural and religious beliefs.

Requirements

  • Must be able to report to various SEMRHI locations and provide support as needed.
  • Must be willing and able to float between clinic locations based on operational needs.
  • Must be willing to provide Spanish interpretation both in person and over the telephone as needed.
  • Must have a high school diploma or GED.
  • Must demonstrate basic computer and typing skills.
  • Must have a pleasant and courteous telephone voice with good diction.
  • Must have formal Spanish language training sufficient to communicate effectively in Spanish and English, or be bilingual.
  • Prior medical interpretation experience required.
  • Knowledge of basic recordkeeping and filing systems.
  • Demonstrates skill in written and oral communication, including assisting patients with necessary forms.
  • Must be able to perform multiple tasks and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
  • Must demonstrate a positive personal attitude, professionalism, dependability, and flexibility.
  • Must understand and maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Must be able to work effectively with patients, families, staff, and visitors from diverse backgrounds.
  • Must be able to pass a criminal background check, drug screen, and TB skin test.
  • Must continuously listen, visualize, and have dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Ability for simple grasping and speed work.
  • Must frequently sit, squat, reach, use both right and left forearm rotation, walk and climb stairs.
  • Must occasionally kneel, twist, have the ability to grasp firmly, lift and carry, push and pull in excess of 30 lbs.

Nice To Haves

  • Some work experience in a healthcare or clerical-related field preferred.
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology helpful.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate effectively with bilingual (Spanish-speaking) patients and families.
  • Provide accurate and effective Spanish interpretation for patients, families, and staff as needed, both in person and over the telephone.
  • Interpret conversations related to patient care, registration, scheduling, medical history, and other healthcare-related needs while maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.
  • Remain available and willing to provide interpretation services throughout the organization based on patient and operational needs.
  • Float to other SEMRHI clinic locations as needed to provide interpretation and/or medical receptionist support and ensure adequate coverage.
  • Update patient information at each visit, including address, telephone number, insurance information, and coverage.
  • Greet patients and visitors in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Keep adequate supplies on hand.
  • Understand and maintain the importance of patient confidentiality.
  • Routinely check the lobby for cleanliness.
  • Effectively scan charts into the system daily.
  • Key and check daily charges for accuracy and make necessary corrections.
  • Complete end-of-day reports and check deposit slips against activity reports.
  • Balance the cash box each morning and afternoon.
  • Collect fees from patients at the time of visit or make appropriate payment arrangements.
  • Accurately interview patients who apply for the sliding scale payment plan.
  • Keep the work area clean and organized.
  • Demonstrate the ability to appropriately communicate with and assist difficult or upset patients.
  • Collect patient satisfaction surveys.
  • Assist the Health Center Manager as requested.
  • Fax information to other locations in a timely manner.
  • Schedule patient follow-up appointments.
  • Provide patients with receipts for payments.
  • Understand and appropriately utilize the computerized medical records system.
  • Maintain journal errors at or below the acceptable level.
  • Print and mail medical records in a timely manner.
  • Answer the telephone, take messages, and schedule appointments accurately.
  • Notate in the medical record when a patient does not show for or cancels an appointment.
  • Verify insurance accurately.
  • Maintain prompt and regular attendance.
  • Verify timecard at the end of each pay period.
  • Complete all trainings prior to deadline.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
